Nov 4, 2010 - Lectoure Markets and Auch/The city of Toulouse/ Happy Halloween and Happy Anniversary Mum and Dad

29th of October Today we got up early did some exercise and then went to a street market in Lectoure. There were all sorts of foods - handmade or hand grown and other accessories like scarfs and handbags. We came out of the market with some vege's and strangely some Asian food for dinner. We came home had some lunch and then took a drive to the largest regional town, Auch, with a huge sports store and supermarket. We bought a French rugby ball and all the kids got a Yo Yo each. As I said we had the Asian food for dinner with some of Mums...

Oct 29, 2010 - Dad's Birthday/ A dinner held for the Mackay's

26th of October Today was Dad's birthday. We didn't do much so we decided to cook up a roast dinner with apple crumble for dessert, just to makes Dad's birthday a little special. The dinner was delicious. We then gave him his presents. A Quicksilver T-shirt from Hossegor and a Christmas tree decoration to remind us of where we are spending Christmas in 2010. 27th of October This highlight today was going to a drinks/party dinner at Jenny and Alastair Barr's house to introduce our family to people in the Gers (the region where we are...

Oct 22, 2010 - Sleep In/ Ruby's Birthday/ Going to a beach house in Hossegor

20th of October We slept in till 10.30am and then had breakfast. We became familiar with some of the areas of the house. A truck came to tow away our broken car. Mum and Dad walked in town to buy supplies, but by the time they arrived the supermarket was closed for lunch. They brought back pizzas, quiche and bread. We were all hungry. That afternoon, we borrowed Alastair and Jenny's Jeep so we could go to town and get our supplies. It had been a long couple of days, so we had dinner and went to bed. 21st of October Today is Ruby's birthday....

Aug 25, 2010 - Bordeaux to Toulouse

We woke up this morning, packed up, said goodbye to Michel and Fabienne and headed to Toulouse. It was a quick drive, despite Dad’s detour to the Toulouse airport, where the Airbus A380 is put together. We hadn’t arranged a tour in advance, so that wasn’t on the agenda. Even after sitting at the airport for a few minutes watching planes, we actually got to the hotel before our room was ready, a first for our trip. The hotel, Residence Clement Ader, was very nice and new, in a courtyard. Initially the street out front seemed a bit rough (we...

Jul 25, 2010 - Quick stop in Toulouse

I caught a ride to the train station from the hostel with a man from the Netherlands. It was nice to have someone to chat with and a ride since the buses don't run on Sundays. I took the next train to toulouse and arrived at about noon. I checked into my hostel then went exploring. It was a Sunday and the town was dead! There were very few stores even open. I started by going to the capitole which, as the hostel man put it, is the mark of Toulouse. Then I headed down to the canal that runs through the city and took a nap. It was perfect!...

Sep 15, 2009 - Toulouse, France

We decided to enter France through Toulouse on a cheap EasyJet ticket, stay a couple of nights and then move on to southern France. So we bought the air tickets and, voila!, found there were no hotels rooms available in Toulouse for the two nights we planned to stay there. As it turned out, there was a National Congress being held starting of our second planned day...just simple bad travel karma: we would not have imagined that we would have a problem finding a room in Toulouse! We did find one for the night we arrived, so we had a bed and...

Jul 15, 2009 - Avis Ambush

At the Avis Depot The manager had managed to find someone in Avis Paris who could speak English to inform me that teh Police were looking for me since I was seen driving away from the accident and my tags were taken -- I informed her that i did drive away but only after looking for the vehicle owner and putting my details under the wiper -- this was standard practise in US and UK. Avis then relayed this to the Cops who asked me to write down all that had happened from my perspective and that would be OK. I did and caught a taxi to the...

Jul 14, 2009 - Last day of vacation & Police Chase

We had an early start to get Jim to Pau for his flight back -- I had been so tired for teh last few days that I couldn't decide where to go after dropping Jim off -- I was in a part of teh Country that I knew and had seen and I knew the van had to be returned the next morning to Toulouse -- So I began driving aimlessly around looking for inspiration -- I decided to go to Oloron St Marie I place I used to go to regularly with a woman I thought I knew -- I even found the house which we rented and could see Christian working in the Garden -- I...

Mar 15, 2009 - Toulouse

took a train to Toulouse. The city was very easy to wander around and see everything in half a day. Toulouse is nicknamed Villa de la Rosa because the buildings are a pinkish (or light orange) color. My host was a very generous Turkish student of philosophy named Dogu (pronounced Doh). Neither French nor English were his natural tongue, so sometimes he would be talking to me and accidentally start speaking French, it was funny. We had good discussions about philosophy.I had quite the international night there; stayed with a Turkish guy in...

Aug 1, 2008 - Toulouse, France

Bonjour!!! After a 13hr flight (with connection in Dusseldorf) we made it to London for a two-night stopover before starting the French leg of our trip - thanks Max and Dan for putting us up, was great to see you guys! This short trip was long enough to confirm that the UK is indeed not kind on a NZ wallet! Can’t wait to start earning those pounds. Our first stop in France is the beautiful city of Toulouse. What a fantastic opener for our trip - a shame we only had the one night there! We met a nice Aussie gal on the plane who has been...

Feb 29, 2008 - Continuing through France to Toulouse

Internet problems prevented me from uploading the photos and publishing this entry, so it is not exactly in "real time". Please imagine that it is 29 February, while I conjure up an update on what happened next...... We spent a full week in Nice and it was nice (ha ha) to have a break from feeling like tourists (relatively speaking). We had planned to do lots of day trips, but in the end we spent most of the time mooching around in Nice eating, visiting the laundromat (a highlight, obviously), looking at art and walking around the city. The...
