Oct 19, 2013 - Together again

Ken arrived in Paris as Sue left for Hong Kong. We caught the train from Paris to Montpellier and picked up the car to drive back to Pezenas. I've done the drive out of Montpellier a couple of times now and had no dramas, of course when I'm trying to impress Ken with my driving ability I miss the turn off and end up driving through the middle of Montpellier.... with it's trams, buses and other crazy traffic. Finally we get on the A9 and head down. Of course once again I choose the incorrect lane to pay the toll so had to call the attendent...

Oct 12, 2013 - Shopping and eating - yes we are related

It's been fantastic having Sue here for the past few days, I've really enjoyed having someone to talk to, I'd actually started to talk to myself quite a lot.....often out loud so I think it was time for company. I've enjoyed sharing this beautiful village and Sue has fallen in love with it too. I loved watching Sue enjoy her first market day today, it really is exciting, watching them set up outside our door, so many varieties of the most delicious fresh food. The stall holders are all so friendly as we try before we buy. We bought enough...

Oct 12, 2013 - To market, to market, to buy a ......

Bonjour mon amis.... Today was the day I was really looking forward to - market day in Pezenas. Linda had told me that this weekly market was huge and attracted crowds from all the surrounding villages who came to buy the local produce. And the best thing of all was that the stalls would be in the main street right outside her apartment. Quite early this morning I could hear the stall holders setting up, shouting their friendly greetings to each other in that gorgeous French accent making me even more eager to get out of bed, open my...

Oct 11, 2013 - Beautiful Pezenas

Bonjour mon amis.... Today is Friday and Pezenas is so beautiful that we have decided to hang about and do the tourist thing....walking all around Pezenas. Linda of course has already done a lot of walking, driving and learning so much that she is almost a local. She speaks to the locals in her 'frenglish' and they reply in fluent French - sometimes practicing their English on her...but always loving that she is doing her best. Greeting her as she passes and in her favourite little restaurants even knowing what local wine she likes to...

Oct 9, 2013 - Here at last

Bonjour mon amis. My 38 hour pilgrimage to the beautiful village of Pezenas in the South of France was worth it ...I have arrived and the 'food festival' has begun. Won't bore you with the details of the flight over except to say two things... 1. Fabulous flight - long but very comfortable. Three seats to myself on all sections. 2. There are two wives somewhere in the world that need to strap their husbands to one of those snoring machines. Holy cow...those two drowned out the sound of the plane's engines. You can usually stop a snorer by...

Oct 6, 2013 - Out and about

This last week I've had 2 days of rain, which gave me the opportunity to catch up on some reading and lazy time, which was nice. Yesterday was Market day again, my favourite day of the week, so I spent the morning at the market and the afternoon at the hairdresser. I was nervous about getting my hair done, as none of the salon staff speak English so with my limited French I managed to make myself an appointment, choose a hair colour and have a trim. Needless to say, my worries were wasted as I am more than happy with both the cut and...

Oct 3, 2013 - L'Amphitryon

This morning I was in two minds what to do, often I feel the pressure to be racing about "seeing" as much as I can but really wanting to hang about in Pezenas. The weather was a lot cooler and with a chance of rain I decided to stay "home" and treat myself to lunch. There are loads of restaurants in Pezenas, quite a few fancy establishments who offer set menu lunches at fabulous prices. These places are the type I wouldn't venture to on my own at dinner, but lunch is more informal and relaxed. I chose L'Amphitryon which gets great reviews...

Sep 25, 2013 - Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert

Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France ("The most beautiful villages of France", this is the nameof an association), and the Abbey of Gellone, which was established in 806, is a designated UNESCO World Heritages site. To say it is beautiful is an understatement, it makes me want to paint and take beautiful photo’s. I’m afraid my photo’s don’t do it justice. It was a pretty drive up there, I only wish I could stop and take photo’s along the way when I’m driving these beautiful roads. The problem is they are...

Sep 24, 2013 - Les Palmiers

Les Palmiers at this point has to be my favourite restaurant. Donna and I ate here in the first week and both loved it. It’s more expensive than the average restaurant I’ve been eating at but so, so worth it. I’ve decided to treat myself here once a week so Saturday night was the night. One of the fabulous things about this restaurant is that there is no printed menu, this is because the menu changes daily depending on what’s in season or whatever the chef feels like cooking. There’s not a lot to choose from, about 4 entrees and 5 mains. As...

Sep 22, 2013 - Les amis de Pézenas (Friends of Pezenas)

There seems to be something going on here all the time, luckily I’m not here for quiet R&R. This morning a few people started arriving in period costume, some stalls were set up and then bang, all of a sudden the street is packed full of people in costume and onlookers. It appears to be an exhibition of fashion presented by Les Amis de Pezenas – the local historical society. It’s being held in the street my little apartment faces, Cours Jean Jaures which in 1627 was an elevated boardwalk Quay that merged the medieval town and the modern...

Sep 21, 2013 - Aux Petits Sabots - warning this is a donkey lovers post!

I am so excited I had donkey cuddles today. I went to Aux Petits Sabots and it was fabulous! I had to drive about an hour towards the mountains and the views on the way to Saint-Chinian were just breathtaking. I will definitely head back up that way when I have more time to stop and enjoy. Dorothee absolutely loves her donkeys and they love her to bits too. They were so healthy and friendly. There were 3 babies born June & Aug and they were so cheeky, one of them kept trying to chew our shoes and they would push and shove to vie for...

Sep 20, 2013 - Béziers & Goodbye's

Yesterday I decided to head to the big smoke, Béziers. With a population of around 70,000 this is huge compared to the little village of Pezenas with 8500. I was a little nervous driving in the city so decided to head for the shopping centre where I was sure to get a park. The major roads around the cities/villages are well laid out in that you enter the city via ring roads, exiting where you need to, therefore not driving through the whole city to get to one side... it makes for easier navigating (take note Sydney!) So the driving was the...
