Feb 27, 2018 - My soccer tour of Southern France

In many ways, soccer can explain the world. It’s just a game, but indeed it’s a game played in every country by all manner of people. A soccer team can reflect its city’s politics, its history, and its soul. I could go on further, but I would perhaps risk belaboring the point - and besides, you probably already understand what I’m trying to say. I have an obsession with life, and thus, I have an obsession with soccer. In France, of course, that latter obsession extends to much of the country. In every little town there’s some kind of local...

Oct 3, 2015 - Montpellier, France

3 October 2015 last one from me for a couple of weeks! I will be busy studying! This morning we had expected to wake up to rain, but when we got up on our last morning in Dijon it was clearing up, so after breakfast we went out co check out the huge under cover markets, and found that Saturday must be "everything markets" day. There was heaps so we had a good wander before heading off to the train. We had another very relaxing train trip, to Montpellier, the rain hit for about two thirds of the way, but amazingly it had stopped by the time...

Buts 2015 Euro Trip

Oct 28, 2014 - commencement de la fin

Left St Christophe early this morning to make Montpellier in time for Margaret and Kerwin to catch their train to Barcelona. Went over the Millau bridge - the tallest bridge in the world with one mast's summit at 343.0 metres (1,125 ft) above the base of the structure. It is the 12th highest bridge deck in the world, being 270 metres (890 ft) between the road deck and the ground below. It opened just 10 years ago. Lunched in Montpellier - fun to see our old city again. I was here 2 years in a row in 2006 and 2007, first to check out the...

Oct 10, 2013 - Auberge du Vieux Puits

Today was a very exciting day for us. Sue and I had booked in to the famous Auberge du Vieux Puits a 3 Michelin star restaurant in Fontjoncouse which is about an hour from here. Fontjoncouse a small village of under 200 people is the smallest town in the world with a 3 Michelin Star restaurant and as there's only 26 3 star restaurants in the whole of France, it's certainly a special treat. Fontjoncouse is tucked away between rocks and garrigue, in a picturesque valley of the Corbières region. In other words, it's in the middle of...

Oct 8, 2013 - Montpellier....how I love thee

I am a little, actually a lot, in love with Montpellier. I should have come here sooner *the sigh you just heard was my credit card*! The excitement started when I had to pop into the Apple Store to pick up a new charger, I use the words "pop in" very loosely. The Apple store is in a massive shopping complex called Odysseum, it's almost it's own suburb. It has an Ikea, a tram stop in the middle, an Olympic ice skating rink, an aquarium & even a planetarium. Holiday Inn are across the road and I'm sure it's a holiday destination hard to...

Jun 29, 2013 - Dance

The 33rd annual dance festival is on in Montpellier at the moment and Gina was keen to go to some performances. Unfortunately, everything was booked out while we are here, however, there were some free performances and we went to one today. We took one of the trams on the excellent tram system away from the centre of town. This was interesting in itself as we say more of the city other than the more tourest orientated centre. The performance was in a small square in which there was also a market so we picked up on that as well. The dance...

Jun 24, 2013 - Milau Suspension bridge and Montpellier

After another 'loud' evening with the alcohol flowing freely in the campgrounds, we packed up the 550 and headed south. What we weren't expecting was to drive down the Mulsanne straight 18 hrs after the race had finished! We joined at the start and went through both chicanes before turning left at the Mulsanne corner. We then headed down to the Millau suspension bridge in true Top Gear style. We stopped at the visitor center and had a walk up to the viewing point and then proceed to stop traffic on the narrow single lane out of the center...

Sep 26, 2012 - Montpellier

We awoke to a rainy day this morning but we still discovered the wonders and history of this beautiful city. Plenty of shopping by some as well more suitcases purchased looks like excess luggage charge with Air France back to Paris. This evening we had an amazing dinner in the heart of Montpellier next to the Fabre Museum.

Jul 2, 2011 - Montpellier

Visit to the old town centre of Montpellier, walked through their 'Arc De Triumphe' over to the 'Aqueduc Saint-Clement', very impressive built in 1754 to supply town with drinking water. We then walked on to the 'Cathedrale Saint Pierre' with its massive Gothic style portico supported by to huge circular columns giving the effect of a medieval fortress. Again it was very warm today so headed back to the town plaza and enjoyed checking out the many, many, many shops; yes there were streets and streets of shops. Then enjoyed McDonald's in the...

The Mediterranean. We arrived at about 11:30 or noon, and stayed until about 4:30. I can't think of a better way to spend a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon. :) I'll get more photos as the weather gets warmer. Expect more of this same sea, but from Barcelona at the end of the month!

Nov 4, 2010 - Millau - The highest bridge in the World

We had an enjoyable breakfast and even played a few board games before departing the hotel. The sun was shining and we had a great drive to the Millau Viaduct. This is the highest bridge in the world, completed in 2006, and it spans a huge valley. In past years there were huge traffic jams when people from Paris headed south to Spain in August. Now, with this 4 lane span, things go smoothly. We had lunch at the tourist centre, and then drove under the bridge on our way back towards Montpellier. We checked into a super economy hotel right...
