Oct 21, 2011 - Ten more days in France

We have had 10 more beautiful days in Fontes, the weather has been in the mid 20s and clear blue skies. We did another great walk, but didn’t notice at the beginning we chose the most difficult. From the top we could see the sea, the Pyrenees Mountains on the border with Spain. On our first day here we noticed a poster about a Lyric Festival in Pezenas so booked tickets for 4 nights. The first night it was held in a beautiful church. And the program was 6 opera singers singing music from the Barber of Seville. The second night was to honour...

Oct 21, 2011 - Canal du Midi

We had read about the Midi Canal before leaving home and where keen to find it. It is a man made canal 240 Kms long built in 1667 over 14 years. It was only used for trade for 10 years then the railway came along. Now its a wonderful thing to walk along the tow path where the horses used to pull barges, ride a barge or ride bikes. It has 99 locks. The dream would be to ride the whole way which is very possible and very flat. The canal is planted with 45,000 Plane trees. We ended up having three encounters with the canal. One day we set off...

Oct 21, 2011 - Animals in France

Amazingly the dogs really do rule here, dog poo is everywhere on the streets. Some towns are starting to introduce plastic bag dispensers but some (mostly the larger ones) are really terrible. Dogs are welcome in restaurants, sometimes there are dogs under every table, but very well behaved. We went into a church in Caux and where surprised to see a dog visiting as well. Our other animal experience was a ginger cat. We started a walk to see an ancient aqueduct and a cat decided to come along. At one point another man came by and cat...

Oct 21, 2011 - Food and wine

Nearly every little village has a “Cave”. A place that produces and sells wine. Most are in beautiful old buildings. Yesterday we went to a place named Fos to do a walk where charcoal used to be made. The soil the vines was growing in was like shale. We decided it would be interesting to try the wine and it was really good, much more like Australian wine. A purchase was made. Food has been great, the “Menu du jour” menu of the day- is a set menu which we engaged in for many lunches, usually three smallish courses, or we could have the Plat...

Oct 16, 2011 - Five days with friends

It was wonderful to have our two friends Isobel and Alison here with us for 5 days. We had a great time being shown around their wonderful home and the surrounding villages. The house is in Fontes looking onto the town square, a great vantage point to see everything that is happening. The countryside is dotted with 6-8 villages within 4-6 Kilometres all with lovely historic town centres. Our first adventure was to the Pezenas markets to get food for the week. Then it was off to the half acre garden and orchard. Its very dry, (but looks lush...
