Driving through Provençe makes you yearn to be a poet or a painter. How else could you possibly capture the essence: fields of brilliant red poppies next to fields of lavender (we cannot imagine how it will look when the lavender produces its purple flowers against the red poppies); cream coloured stone houses with soft blue shutters; arbours hanging heavily with grapes; villages full of old stone houses perched on hills and flowers everywhere you look. It almost feels like all of Provene is a set for one of those dreamy, romantic films...

Jul 18, 2005 - Carcassonne/Preixan

I arrived in Carcassonne on Bastiel Day. Its wierd but I was at that stage of my trip where I needed a holiday from my holiday, so a week in a small, quiet little town in the South of France seemed like the perfect thing. I was actually staying in the neighbouring town of Preixan but I was meeting Jan - the owner of Sidsmum's Retreat where I would be staying, in Carcassonne because everyone was up there for the celebrations.
