May 10, 2006 - On to Paris!

We returned the rental car in Tours without a problem, and the next TGV (high speed train) heading to Paris was just 15 minutes away - perfect timing! The trip between Tours and Paris by car was over 2 hours, but by taking the high-speed train, we were able to make it in just under an hour. Sweet! We checked into our hotel, near la place de la Madeleine (a church modeled after a Greek temple), then set off to accomplish our main objective for our visit to Paris: go to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Anything else besides the Eiffel tower was...

May 1, 2006 - Spring in Paris

So Paris is exciting! The first night we got here we stayed in the non-touristy 10e quarter in a hotel. It was a Saturday night and nothing was available - the hotel room didnt have a shower - it cost 4 euro extra! The keyboards in France are extremely different so this update is hard to do - so ignore the typos. on the first night I met a guy named Leigh from Calgary and he is travelling with us for a bit - he has no real plans so it is easier for hi, to start his vacation zith us and get to know Europe faster. Yesterday in Paris it...

May 1, 2006 - Paris, France

WARNING - back to French keyboards, Q may mean A, Z may mean W and , could stand for M After some worrying moments being the only ones at the bus stop at 5:45 and realising it was the May Day public holiday our bus did make and we got a lovely scenic trip through the Pyrenees. The snow fields looked excellent if anyone is ever over this way during winter. We then got a bus-train-train and twelve hours later we were in Paris. Our joy was soon overcome by a realisation that despite only being within metres of the Sacre Cçèr were were staying...

Apr 24, 2006 - Bonjour (Hello) Paris

Hello Paris! We took the nite train to get here and I had my first sleeper car experience. And it was not very good. The room was almost unbearably hot. Since Manny and I were in a room with 2 other guys it was not easy to just get up and just cool the place down...and we did not even know how to do it anyway...or if it was even possible. The good thing was that the train arrived into the station only 5 minutes late - pretty good for a 12 hour train ride. Those first 5 lines took forever to write..the keyboards in France are worse than any...

Apr 23, 2006 - Outtakes, B-Sides and Post-Trip Wrap-Up

Last Chance to See Shanhaiguan Mike Hamn Fast Food There are moments when working on a China guidebook is reminiscent of racing Formula 1 cars on foot. You just can't keep up - especially when changes involve, say, flattening an entire town (this time around it was Shanhaiguan). Okay, maybe not the entire town - the city walls are still there at least. But inside the walls? FYI, there's lots of rubble at present. The word on the street is that developers paid a certain county governor some additional cash to get the wrecking ball...

Apr 19, 2006 - Paris, France

We arrived in Paris at 10 am and found our hotel near the Eiffle tower. We then got some food at a cafe and then had anice long nap. When we woke up we went over to the Eiffle Tower and walked around the neighbourhood and found a place for dinner. The Tower is really pretty at night but not so much in the day. The next day we walked a million miles to try to find a hostel. The first one was full and we didn't find another for a long time. But it was a good way to see the Latin Quarter and Notre Dame. We met a guy from South Africa, one from...

Apr 19, 2006 - France - Paris

After only about an hours sleep, the flight to Paris was a bit of a struggle, but we made it to the airport on time & were in Paris before we knew it. Paris brought out the real tourists in Alison & me. We managed to do something new everyday, not wasting any time, & we still didn't have long enough to see everything that the city had to offer. On our first day we headed to the Eiffel Tower, where we climbed about a million steps to the second level, then caught the lift up to the top. It would actually have been a lot easier if you could...

Apr 14, 2006 - Paris photos

Dear All Iam trying to load a few photos on to the website, but I am not having much luck. Will see how we go. Please excuse the typos - it's not that I am out of practice, it's these darned French keyboards, most unkind to us Aussies; Will type more this afternoon, but just wanted to see if I can get the photos going. Love from us all

Apr 11, 2006 - Le Photographique...

Ok, So Paris is pretty awesome. This may be considered as one of my larger understatements, but after 2 days I'm only just getting to the point where I'm not blown away by the Eiffel Tower (which, by the way I see every morning and night, and any other time I care to get up and look out my hotel window - like I said, awesome). Yesterday I wandered around the entire right bank shopping area, from the Champs Elysees to the Place Vendome, encompassing the Louvre (the outside, the line freaked me out, as I didn't have a museum pass yet), and...

BLACHUT WORLD TOUR

Apr 5, 2006 - Flying South

Paris is cold and gray, and all of the grass in the city seems to have been removed for refurbishing. Hoping it will be a little brighter on our return at the end of June. Erin and I are both fighting colds, so it has been a bit of a slow start to the trip. So far, we've hit most of the main sites of Paris - the tower, the champs elysses, arc de triumph, the louvre, etc. Heading out to Nice early tomorrow morning - looking forward to the Mediterranean coast! Will add pics to the site as soon as we find somewhere to upload them.
