Aug 26, 2018 - Stage 2 Chalons en Champagne to St Dizier

Overview/ Highlights we rode a lot of today beside the canals, except the middle section where we rode on local roads through farming land. We have left the champagne vineyards behind us now. First stop today was Vitry Le Francois at 34km. The sun was shining brightly and we parked our bikes under the town square trees and had a coffee in one of the cafes facing the square. We are not the only ones. A group of guys on motorbikes also thought it was a great place for a coffee break. After a suitable rest, on we rode, back on the canal...

Aug 25, 2018 - Day 1 - Reims to Chalons

Even if you have no interest in champagne, you would enjoy a few days in Reims. You would know about the cathedral of course, where the French kings were crowned. At night there is a light show covering the front of the cathedral (puts Sydney’s Vivid to shame) which depicts the renovations made to it after WW2. It’s a stunning piece of 3D computer graphics work. It’s so realistic that the dogs in the audience start howling. There is a tram in one of the main streets that literally runs on grass. No, not powered by dope - it rolls along on...

Aug 25, 2018 - Stage 1 Reims to Chalons en Champagne

Overview/ Highlights Rode along the canal for approx 16km. Lovely retired french woman led us on her bike, on a detour route, when we came across a section of the canal path closed due to bridge work. I heard her life story then we said our farewells and we were on our way. Next discovery was a war cemetery. A quick look there then we left the canal path and started to climb through the champagne vineyards. Lots of manual harvesting going on. Part the way up the climb we stopped briefly in the winery village of Verzy and had a quick drink...

Aug 22, 2018 - the team assembles in Reims

Another warm day. Caught a train and met Tom as he changed from TGV onto the Reims train. He was struggling to carry / drag his 29kg bike box as security had taken his tiny spanners to attach wheels to box. We both carried it 500m to hotel with many breaks along the way Helen and Roman arrived and we walked to cathedral to collect our pilgrims passports. Exciting ! Back through the lovely centre of the city with time for an ice cream and drinks. A rest for Tom back at hotel before we all headed out to dinner. Yummy moules frites and once...

Aug 22, 2018 - Flying to Reims

I’m now en route to Paris (France, not Tennessee) with 14 hours to spare. I don’t know what to do with myself now all the rush is over, so I’ll tell you about ELVIS, my black steel touring bike, which will accompany me everywhere, and his travel box. It’s mainly about those damned security x-ray checks of your carry-on bag. I always worry about what they will find in there, ever since I nearly got on a plane out of Saigon back in the nineties, with a lid of grass tucked away in my bag - someone had thoughtfully placed it there without...

Aug 21, 2018 - A day of training training training

A long day but without hitch. Despite getting up very early I still seemed to be rushing to get to my train on time. Tore past a guy on a folding bike on my way to the station, with a cheery ‘bon jour’. Me laden down with panniers on a much heavier bike. But as I hesitated at an intersection, not sure if I was turning the wrong way into a one way road, he shot past me and lead the way to the station. Quickly dismounting and rushing up the flight of stairs and I cruised past looking for a more suitable entrance for Max. After struggling to...

The French have been so helpful and sweet.. Europe Holiday 2018

Jun 1, 2018 - Day 12 - Troyes

We were off again at 0830hrs with plans to stay off the major roadways and to grab a bite for breakfast on the way. Clearing Dijon was not difficult despite traffic building. Our first stop after making a wrong turn was at Sombernon at a local Boulanger where we had pastries and a coffee. The girl serving was very sweet, friendly and helpful; a pleasant encounter. On our path to Chateau de Chateauneuf we stopped briefly, thinking we had reached the Chateau to find we were at the Chateau de Commarin. We stopped and enquired about entry and...

May 22, 2018 - Day 2 - Epernay

The departure for CDG was delayed an additional 45 mins due to a technical problem however we landed in Paris at 0738 hrs. Contrary to last years lengthy delay at immigration due to aircraft and passenger congestion, we were at the baggage carousel in quick time. The shine was taken from this good performance as we then waited 45 mins for our bags to arrive; we were very close to the last to receive ours. Finding Europcar in terminal 2C provided no problems, however, receiving our car took close to 75mins. This was caused by a very...
