Aug 22, 2018 - the team assembles in Reims

Another warm day. Caught a train and met Tom as he changed from TGV onto the Reims train. He was struggling to carry / drag his 29kg bike box as security had taken his tiny spanners to attach wheels to box. We both carried it 500m to hotel with many breaks along the way Helen and Roman arrived and we walked to cathedral to collect our pilgrims passports. Exciting ! Back through the lovely centre of the city with time for an ice cream and drinks. A rest for Tom back at hotel before we all headed out to dinner. Yummy moules frites and once...

Aug 22, 2018 - Flying to Reims

I’m now en route to Paris (France, not Tennessee) with 14 hours to spare. I don’t know what to do with myself now all the rush is over, so I’ll tell you about ELVIS, my black steel touring bike, which will accompany me everywhere, and his travel box. It’s mainly about those damned security x-ray checks of your carry-on bag. I always worry about what they will find in there, ever since I nearly got on a plane out of Saigon back in the nineties, with a lid of grass tucked away in my bag - someone had thoughtfully placed it there without...

Aug 21, 2018 - A day of training training training

A long day but without hitch. Despite getting up very early I still seemed to be rushing to get to my train on time. Tore past a guy on a folding bike on my way to the station, with a cheery ‘bon jour’. Me laden down with panniers on a much heavier bike. But as I hesitated at an intersection, not sure if I was turning the wrong way into a one way road, he shot past me and lead the way to the station. Quickly dismounting and rushing up the flight of stairs and I cruised past looking for a more suitable entrance for Max. After struggling to...

Well!! What a fabulous few days .. so one day Mumm the next Moët & Chandon and today my favourite Verve clicqout .. have absolutely loved the history the cathedral and the champagne !! The French have been so helpful and sweet.. I’ve learnt some french which helps a little .. the city of Reims I has very different architecture obviously cause of the attacks and bombing in both world wars , but thankfully the cathedral is still in one piece, however it now has a concrete roof structure not wood .. fascinating and 33 coronations happened...

Europe Holiday 2018

Apr 28, 2018 - The Champagne Region

We left this morning at 7:30 to get to Reims in time for our 9:30 tour at G.H. Mumm. Thanks to Dennis for the driving. Who knew the founder was Georg Hermann Mumm, a Deutscher? Amelie was our guide who took us through the caves and shared the history of Mumm and how they make their champagne. I swear we did not taste until about 11:30am, far more respectable a time than 9:30am when the tour began. After Mumm we found a parking spot closer to the center of the city and first toured the Market Hall which was full of people doing their...

Grand Tour

Aug 2, 2016 - Reims

Why a trip to Reims? The cathedral where 33 kings of France were crowned and anointed is here. Reims is in the champagne region and Reims is where chalk caves store hundreds of thousands of bottles of champagne. The TGV gets you to Reims from Paris gare de l’est in 45 minutes. We arrived in Reims on Tuesday about 4:15 and followed the instructions of our Airbnb host to pick up the door key from his friend. We already like the town. With a map obtained at the train station, we walk to our Airbnb flat in the Clemenceau neighborhood, about 20...

Lavender's Travels

Apr 22, 2015 - Bruges, Belgium, then on to Chalons de Champagne

Wednesday 22nd, We found Bruge, Brussels an enchanting medieval towne. Narrow cobblestone streets, canals and of course squares and churches. A fun horse and buggy ride through the town with a German couple who spoke no English took about and hour. Our driver spoke English and limited German so we all tried our best to help this couple in explaining the sites. This horse had obviously been trained to this route without cars nor people being present. He just ignored them. We had people slamming on brakes in both cars and on their bikes and...

Jan 6, 2015 - Reims

We had parked up for the night on a small Camping Aire close to the town centre with free overnight parking for 10 motorhomes. Fortunately for us lots of French towns & cities provide this type of Aire for motorhomes & most are free. We did spend a couple of hours wandering around the town last night but the decision was made to push on directly South as all the WW1 sites I planned to visit in this area are closed at this time. Yesterday had been a beautiful sunny day but very cold & it was down to freezing overnight but it is nice & cosy...

Apr 22, 2014 - Day 20 – Tuesday 22 April – Paris to Reims

Though this is the same day, I have created it as two entries so that I can trace it on the map. We then toured back on the bus, picked up our gear from the hotel and jumped a train to Reims which was only one hour 20 minutes away and then checked in. We then walked into the city square, poked around for a while, had dinner and then found crepes to share. Keeping in mind it is still light at 9pm.
