Oct 1, 2018 - On the champagne trail

It was our last full day in the Champagne region, so we thought it would be nice to follow one of the many champagne tourist routes that we’ve spotted around the place. So we decided to take a circuit to the west of Épernay along the Vallé de Marne. We started following the Marne River along its southern bank. Once again, the slopes were blanketed with vines and punctuated with tiny little villages, each with their own champagne makers and cellars. This area too, especially to the northwest, is rife with Romanesque churches, in various...

Sep 30, 2018 - Gothic glory

Today is our day to revisit Reims and redeem our memories of the city. Last time we were there we had booked into an appalling, noisy hotel, and so escaped first thing the next morning to a luxury hotel in Luxembourg. We saw nothing of the rest of Reims, so we really needed to fix that oversight. Reims is only about half an hour’s drive north of Épernay and we headed straight for the cathedral this time, and holy cow, what an architectural marvel. Having been being heavily damaged during World War I, it has been (and is still being)...

Sep 29, 2018 - Grand Final blues and champagne

Jane woke early this morning to watch the Grand Final between the Pies and the Eagles. It was a close, tense match but disappointingly went the Eagles’ way in the dying minutes. No singing of the Pies anthem today! But we got on with our plans and after a hotel breakfast walked up the road to get our Hertz hire car for the next few days. Happily we have been given a super cute three-door Fiat 500, a driver’s car, with sensitive steering and a responsive, if small, engine. We're particularly happy because, not surprisingly, it's so much...

May 22, 2018 - Day 2 - Epernay

The departure for CDG was delayed an additional 45 mins due to a technical problem however we landed in Paris at 0738 hrs. Contrary to last years lengthy delay at immigration due to aircraft and passenger congestion, we were at the baggage carousel in quick time. The shine was taken from this good performance as we then waited 45 mins for our bags to arrive; we were very close to the last to receive ours. Finding Europcar in terminal 2C provided no problems, however, receiving our car took close to 75mins. This was caused by a very...

Jun 30, 2017 - Day 6: In Épernay

Day 6: In Épernay – driving to then looking around the town. Weather: 18C – cooler, cloudy with a few showers and sunshine in between. Steps: 18 0(10.5km) It was much cooler last night, but not quite down to Melbourne’s overnight temperatures!! I decided to try a local boulangerie-pâtisserie I had seen yesterday called Pain et Cie. There were a few people already eating so I followed their lead. It looked rather like a Le Pain Quotidien store in its furniture and shop fittings. I selected their ‘continental’ petit déjeuner with orange...

Apr 19, 2015 - About time for an update

Sorry it's been so long. Even though we are taking our time, there aren't enough hours in the day to do what we want to do. Since our last post, we have wound up 5 days in Paris, driven up to Bruge for 3 nights and then headed back south through country France spending a night in Laon and now on our second day in Epernay which is right in the middle of Champagne country. The weather has been fantastic, I don't think we have seen a cloud since arriving in Europe and it has been quite warm. Paris was wonderful, we spent most of our time just...

Apr 23, 2014 - Day 21 – Wednesday 23 April – Epernay & Hautvillers

Sleep in day today, breakfast in Reims city square and then some down time and do our washing. In the afternoon we hired a car and drove to Hautvillers (pronounced Overlay) about a 30 minute drive. Here we went to Tribaut Cellars for some Champagne testing since this is the region where Champagne is made. After about eight glasses (between us) I had to stop or I would not be able to drive home. From here we drove on to Epernay (pronounced as it is spelt) and had a walk around this lovely town. We found a nice spot for dinner and where I...

Apr 17, 2014 - Champagne Tour of Mumm and Moet & Chandom

Tom and I were up and at it early this morning to be at the bus for the tour of the Champagne Region at 7:30am. It was a lovely trip with beautiful photos of the countryside of which you will see. We toured the Mumm Champagne house in Reims with a brief history and then a trip to the cellars and ending with a tasting of the Mumm Champagne. We then went to Epernay to the Moet and Chandon House for another tour and tasting. The cellars were extensive and he amount of champagne stored below was unbelievable. Both were extremely interesting and...

Jun 12, 2012 - Epernay - Paris to Venice........so far

Norm takes over for a few anecdotes about the trip so far. Having a fabulous time. No photos at this stage. That's my fault of course. Haven't got the right app. Paris was fabulous, fell in love with it. The buildings are just like in the pictures. No more than six stories high. Five stories and a studio on top. Footpath shared by pedestrians, push bikes and Motor bikes. Traffic on the road is worse. And there are other issues on the footpath. I saw a bloke the other day (a bum), start to drop his strides on Rue Chenin Vert. What's he...

Apr 28, 2009 - Paris to Epernay,France

Bonjour... sorry these updates are 3 days behind, had no internet for a few days. Sadly we farewelled Paris this morning and our cute apartment. The bags have got heavier and we had to drag them all down the 4 flights of stairs...mission. Then, to the Metro station, another few major lots of stairs, but we got there. Got off Metro and had to walk to Peugeot centre where we picked up our brand new Peugeot 308 sw car!! It is blue and his name is Gus, and Jane is our friendly GPS to tell us where to go (although she has gone wrong once). so...

Apr 17, 2009 - Day 15, Epernay

Disclaimer: This blog was never really meant for anyone to read other than Eunice and I as a way to remember every day of our trip, but if you happen to be here, welcome! Be prepared for some internal jokes or jargon that only Eunice and I use though. :) --- We decided to go Epernay at the last min because of Moet and Chandon, which is also home to Dom Perignon. The cellar tour was interesting, and as usual, it ends with a tasting session. I never knew Champagne production could be so complicated, but so simple at the same time. This was...
