May 26, 2017 - Can't beleive the first week is over!!

Before I start with my thoughts I want to give you all a warning--I might hit my "free" capacity on this website, and PayPal is not being cooperative with letting me reset a password. If that happens, I will continue my journaling, but may have to post it when I get home. I hope not to have that problem! Yesterday's tour of the village turned out to be something other than what I had expected! I thought it was something arranged for the students--but instead it was for whomever in town wanted to go! There were about 200 people when it...

May 25, 2017 - Farmers Market

This will probably not be a surprise, but the French have elevated the farmer's market to an art form! They don't just set up tents and then load things out of the back of a pick up truck. Mais non!! They have very elaborate trailers that they pop open, with refrigerated showcases, and both fresh and prepared food of all kinds! And of course there are the vendors who sell things other than food, though I was quite frankly surprised to see that one of them was set up to sell mattresses! But before I went to the farmers market, which was on...

May 24, 2017 - La Cuisine!!

Today, after class, we had a group cooking session! A couple of the teachers shared family recipes--Quiche Lorraine, Mushroom and Leek tart, Chocolate mousse and a few other things. We divided up into teams and went to work! Recipes were written in French, so even for those of us who are pretty comfortable in the kitchen, we had challenges! My team made a few mistakes, for instance we did not interpret a "yellow egg" to mean only the yolk. Then we did not know that we were to keep the leeks and mushrooms separate, because one was getting...

May 23, 2017 - On a couple of missions this AM

Today class is in the afternoon--but I have already had a busy morning! Top of my list was to check out the pool in the next town over. It is the high school pool so hours are odd, but looks like there is a good window after today's class! I am ready for a workout; so far it's my brain getting the work out, time to get my body moving! I have no idea what this pool will be like (though it is 25M; good news there). I am used to swimming with serious swimmers so hoping to get that. At least they lap swim in the same direction, same as with...

May 22, 2017 - Sancerre, Day 1 and 2

So I quite frankly woke up this morning with a little trepidation, wondering how I was going to get through 4 hours of class! But that wore off quickly--almost as soon as we got started. There are just 3 of us in my class. Peter, a Canadian getting ready to move to Texas (that's a change for you!), and Cynthia, from Connecticut. Peter is far more advanced than either Cynthia or me. But ultimately that is good! It gives you something to work towards. The four hours flew by! Most of it was conversation, loosely structured around French...

May 21, 2017 - In Sancerre; if only I had internet!

C'est dommage!! I am in Sancerre with much to say and pictures to share, but can not get internet connection on my computer!! So will share much tomorrow. I did NOT enjoy driving myself out of Paris! I love Haussmann' architecture and city plan, but when you are driving, everything looks the same! Was thrilled when I finally stumbled across La Madeleine-finally a point of reference! Once out of Paris the highway was great. Sancerre is everything I thought it would be, and at the same time nothing like it. I will explain that once able to...

May 20, 2017 - Arrived--tired, but I am here!

So perhaps there is a benefit to all the time it took to get here--I don't seem to be suffering any jet lag! Maybe spending two nights flying on airplanes takes care of that problem. And even though I know this from previous trips to other countries, once again I am reminded that things don't always work the same way that they do in the US. This time it is rental cars. I felt awake enough after landing that I thought I should just drive straight to Sancerre, and be well settled for class to start on Monday. I figured I would just show up...

May 19, 2017 - An Auspicious Start

So I am not in the City of Light but in the City of Brotherly Love! A very unfortunate alignment of weather and equipment malfunction! We first spent an hour waiting in line for take off due to weather issues in the East and the need for spacing. Once airborne, we were over Toronto when we were told the radio system had a problem and we could not proceed trans-Atlantic, and the repair had to be made in Chicago. So back we go--but we were too heavy, so had to spend an additional 2 hours circling in order to burn fuel! Once back at ORD...
