Oct 1, 2017 - Chateau Letard, St. Erblon, Rennes, France

Oh such a lovely night sleep. For the second night, I was nestled under three blankets, a thick douvet, and playing footsie with the foxy fur hot water bottle. I got up, dressed quickly, and went downstairs to a warmly heated kitchen, and took my place at the table infront of the fire place. God bless Marina, I was greeted with a beautiful smiling face and a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. "Good morning, Robin. How did you sleep? Sorry about the power problems.... when I could sit quietly, and think, and not be bothered by the...

Sep 30, 2017 - Chateau Letard, St. Erblon, Rennes, France. (Day #1/2)

We are leaving Milena and Greece this morning and heading to France, to Marina and Jacques home in St. Erblon, to drop Nelson off, and Monday morning we leave Rennes on the TGV (french fast train) to Paris then the Eurostar from Paris to London -- but I am getting way ahead of myself -- this is Saturday, and we are only going as far as St. Erblon, in Rennes, today..... so back to the here and now. Alarms going off -- and Milena is fully engaged in trying to awaken her inhabitants at 3:`15a.m. . Oh golly, looking at the clock on Milena,...

May 27, 2017 - Mont St-Michel

An early start today with all on the bus and off by eight o'clock. Travelling is hard work sometimes. We were headed to Mt St Michel the Abbey ser atop a small rock, island off the coast of France in a bay which has Normandy at one end and Brittany at the other. Our first distant view of the island came at a confront stop after about an hour and a half and it gradually came into view as we drove as did the lines of traffic heading in the same direction. A shuttle bus took us across the bridge to the island where a huge sweeper was clearing...

Jun 19, 2016 - Rennes

Rennes is the capital of the Bretagne region, so we decided to pause here for the weekend, instead of just using it as a place to change trains. We are glad we made the decision. We had booked a room for two nights at a small hotel, with a super breakfast, a short walk from the old city, the train station, and the tourist office. The first stop, after the hotel, was the tourist office where they recommended a self guided walking tour with a map called, tourist circuit. The walk took us past 18 buildings of interest for a solid, general...

Sep 12, 2015 - Pontorson, & Rennes France

Hi All We left Mont Saint-Mechel after a late breakfast, thankfully most of the rain happened while we slept , then back to Pontorson only a short ride - so had heaps of time to wander around. Forgot to mention we stayed in a little place called Ardevon, in a very nice hotel about 1.5 km from the parking area to Mont Saint -Mechel, the lady receptionist kept prattling on about sheep after 6.30pm & to be careful. We thought nothing of it, until just before heading for dinner I saw the herd of sheep straight outside our window, in the morning...

Jun 26, 2015 - Rennes - Day 33

We both agreed that we are suffering from travel fatigue and experiencing periods of declining motivation. This was evident with our 1100hr departure from the hotel to explore the city of Rennes. A light breakfast ( one pastry less than usual - we are going Paleo on RTA) ) was enough to power our batteries and wander the back streets and take in the cities buildings and watch people at play. I had previously read, what I thought was a strange comment, that Remmes feels like a university town of young people. I can now see the rationale to...

Jun 25, 2015 - Rennes - Day 32

We planned to be away at 0830hrs as we expected a long day of driving and we nearly made the start time by 10 mins Our first stop was La Roche - Bernard, 40 km ESE of Vannes. The town is noted for it's strategic position over the river Vilaine as from it's height's, with impressive views of the river and the surrounding valleys, it's fortifications and cannons could dominate the river. It was a Thursday morning when the market comes to town and the streets around Centre Ville were lined with stalls of food, clothing, household items and...

Aug 19, 2012 - Train Day: Pontorson to Rennes (photos) to Lyon to Nice

Hello Folks, Not too much to report here. Nothing but a train day. However, had a fun time getting to the Pontorson Train station. My train was leaving at 11am to Rennes (southwest) and I figured buses will be semi-plenty for a Sunday. Uhh, not! Closest bus time was at 1045am so that wasn't going to happen. Lady at the front desk called a cab. And another cab. It seemed she had never done this! Complete debacle. It was 1015am and no cab call back. Uh, I can't run 6.7miles to grab the train. So, overhead a Japanese Guy speaking English to...

May 30, 2011 - Rennes vers Paris et Montréal

Bonjour !
