Jul 2, 2017 - Day 8: From Saint-Martin-du-Puy to Dijon

Day 8: Travelling from Saint-Martin-du-Puy to Dijon. Weather: 16C – cool. Sun out earlier but intermittent light showers all day. Steps: 11 000 (6.3km) After a delightful dinner and conversation last night, I did question why I was not staying at more BnB establishments but they are easier to find in rural areas and not so much in larger towns and cities. Breakfast commenced for me at 9:00am after a good night’s sleep. There was one couple at the table finishing their breakfast – from Germany but the husband was of Dutch background. We...

Jul 1, 2017 - Day 7: Travelling from Épernay to Saint-Martin-du-Puy

Day 7: In Saint-Martin-du-Puy after driving from Épernay – 3h 50min of driving time and 240km. Weather: 16C – cool, cloudy with constant rain all day. The temperature was what the car told me! Steps: 10 000 (5.6 km) - lots of driving today with walking only before I left and in Vézelay. Continental Breakfast in the hotel was really pretty good and for just €10.50 – good variety and fresh looking. There seemed to be many Germans staying and having breakfast when I was eating this morning. I was very pleased I parked where I did, in a car...

Apr 6, 2007 - Circle tour in western Burgundy

Our first stop on Thursday was the 'Grottos' (caves) of Arcy. Despite our lack of French, which meant that we missed all the interesting details of the guide's commentary, the tour was fascinating. We spent about an hour underground, in part of an extensive cave system in the limestone of the 'Paris basin' that underlies much of Burgundy. They have found bits of stone tools from neolithic hunters, and there are a few cave paintings that were only discovered in the 1990s. They were covered with a thin veneer of calcite. I was curious about...

Apr 5, 2007 - Fountainebleau to Arcy sur Cure

Fountainebleau was the country palace and hunting lodge of French kings from Francis I (early 1500s) to Napoleon and beyond. The palace is huge, with only a few rooms of the royal apartments open to the public. The décor and furnishings date mostly from time of Louis Philippe or Napoleon III in the 1800s. The palace is in the centre of the town of Fountainebleau, and the extensive gardens are free to the public. We saw lots of young people eating their lunches on the lawns & benches. We are clearly ahead of the main wave of tourists, and...

Apr 6, 2006 - Our new home in Burgundy
