Oct 26, 2009 - Strasbourg
There seems to be a dearth of cheaper hotels in Switzerland, or else we are not recognising the right places, so we are off back into France, fast becoming a favourite destination. Meandered our way north after crossing the border and ended up in Strasbourg, at, of all places, the Ibis Hotel for two nights. ... Took a cruise around the island which makes up the oldest part of Strasbourg- it is just chocka with magnificent buildings, some stone, and some wooden structures, plus a gigantic cathedral with a most unusual astronomical clock inside. ... Most of the island is walking streets which we took advantage of, exploring all the nooks and crannies. There seems to be a dearth of cheaper hotels in Switzerland, or else we are not recognising the right places, so we are off back into France, fast becoming a favourite destination. Aug 24, 2007 - Natzwiller - Struthof Concentration Camp
Today, not unlike yesterday (when we went to the Alsace Adventure Park, swinging through trees and ziplining across valleys, 150 metres above the forest floor) was at the other end of the emotional spectrum. Through the little village of Hohwald and its beautiful winding mountain road, we arrived shortly thereafter at the Natzwiller-Struthof Concentration Camp. ... Our very first encounter with this incredibly moving site was the road sign requesting silence in memory of the more than 60,000 prisoners that perished here.Today, not unlike yesterday (when we went to the Alsace Adventure Park, swinging through trees and ziplining across valleys, 150 metres above the forest floor) was at the other end of the emotional spectrum.
