May 27, 2019 - Helsinki, Jyvaskyla, Oulu

Yesterday we saw Helsinki in the rain. Sometimes it sprinkled and sometimes it poured. It sprinkled when we ran to catch the # 40 bus to the train station and city center. And while we walked through Esplanade Park to the harbor and Market Square. It poured while we had coffee awaiting the Helsinki Harbour Cruise. On the boat cruise through the archipelago we saw and learned a lot. First there was the ferry terminals with their ice breaker equiped ferries...both the Viking and Silka lines as well as the one across to Tallin 87 kms away....

May 2, 2009 - Central Finnland

We decide to take in a few of the towns of central Finland on our way up to Lapland. Our first stop is Kupio, known as the home of Finland's biggest Smoke Sauna but our experience of the town is more like Finland's biggest ghost town on account of the Easter holiday .... we suspect. The city is empty and there are no people to be seen, just dozens of cold, grey 60's style buildings, lifeless shops, car less streets and a little slushy, brown snow hanging around on the sides of the roads and on the paths, that's about it. Jul 18, 2008 - Oulu

Third day feeling like a kid again? Why not! A visit to a zoo and then swimming in a sea sure can make you feel childlike! An hour south from Rovaniemi is the small town of Ranua with its only claim to fame, an arctic animal wildlife habitat. Other than that, it consists of two gas stations, a small convenience store/souvenir shop and a few houses. The zoo in this town, however, was well worth the visit. The park exhibits all of the animals one finds north of the arctic circle, including the moose (which we have yet to see in the...

Aug 4, 2007 - Martinselkonen Wilderness Centre

August 4th The midnight flight to Oulu was on time and we arrived at 1 am. The first surprise was that it was actually dark. It was not supposed to go dark here. As we walked down the steps to the tarmac there was a light drizzle and the ground was very wet, but it was very light rain and certainly not a problem walking to the terminal. The rest of the group comprised a couple from Norfolk, Andy and Sarah, Gretal, an Aussie, now from Devon and Peter from Derbyshire. The other two we still had to meet. Peter was the unlucky one. His bag did...

Jul 13, 2004 - Scandanavia

Greetings, all. Having trouble finding a place to post photos in Scandanavia, so perhaps next week. Left Italy, where we stayed for free in a nice villa provided by our friends, the bar owners. Then spent a night with no sleep in a sweaty, loud hostel near the train station. Renee went to see her sister in Germany, and Alyssa and I flew to Stockholm. Man, mucho expensive here. Rented some bicycles, to tour around, and had a drink in a bar made entirely of ice. Chairs, tables, glasses, everything. They give you parlas and gloves! Pics later....
