Sep 26, 2013 - Days 39 & 40 - Tampere

I headed off for a couple of days in Tampere and the journey from Helsinki by train was something new in itself. As you’d expect, the trains are very clean, punctual and smooth, but the train I booked was a double-decker train, which was a first for me. Sitting on the top deck you had a great view of the countryside, although there was not a great deal to see as southern Finland is very flat! As I got off the train, I noticed that the temperature was a heck of a lot colder than Helsinki; the public thermometers were reading around 7C!...

Aug 3, 2011 - Lakeside holiday

'The lake outside my window is mirrorlike..not a ripple. The mist is slowly creeping across its span and the light is slowly dimming as night begins to tighten its grip. On my patio I stand in awe of the stillness, the peace which surrounds me. A bird tweets good night in a nearby tree. A fish burps an air bubble which then brakes the water's surface...plop.Birch trees line the shore still and tall. The boat lays lazily up against one of them, with oars at the ready to take up paddling through the waters deep. The smoke has ceased billowing...

Jul 31, 2011 - Holiday by the lake

Ok, after a five hour bus trip I was brought to this heavenly little place by a lake by my brother and his wife. They have been here for 2 weeks and have been generous to provide me with my own little holiday hut (mökki). The smoke began to plume from the sauna chimeney shortly after my arrival. The evening was spent enjoying the tranquility of the heat and running along the jetty to swim in the lake (TRUE Finnish style). It's so peaceful here. Went rowing around the lake today. Blue skies and gentle breeze...ideal.

Jul 30, 2011 - Bus trip

I was met by my godmother, Katri and cousin, Päivi at train station in Lahti. How wonderful it was to meet them again. My mother's sister is 92 and doing well, loves her plants and flowers like my mother did. Went swimming with Päivi in a nearby lake to cool off! Hot again. Finland has truly been showing off her beauty by her lakes, countryside, flowers and weather. My cousin was good enough to feed and house me overnight & take me to the bus. Jyväskylä has been the centre of attention here due to the World Rally Championship. Petrol heads...

Jun 24, 2011 - Midsummers Festival, Helsinki, Finland

Lovely to see the sun shining against the blue sky today. It was warm with a cook breeze and just perfect. We headed off for a leisurely walk around the city to enjoy the festivites for Midsumers. The Midsummer Festival 'Juhannus' (still celebrated as the Feast of St John in some parts of Europe) is one of the biggest events of the year. Many of the cafes here remind me of Paris where the seats are all facing the streets so as to people watch. There is a long esplanade through the centre of town where we sat down to enjoy a Peruvian...

Jun 23, 2011 - MS Gabriella Cruise, Stockholm to Helsinki

After a long long day we finally made it to our Cruise Ship that will take us to Helsinki. Upon embarking we were offered given a double room to which my reply was not so positive. This Cruise was fairly expensive so I complained and once we set sail we were appreciating give two rooms. I refreshed with a great shower caught up on some chores and went to look around the ship. Not long after we met up to have dinner, a yummy vegan burger which went down very well. I retired to my room to lay back on my bed and simply gaze at the rolling...

Mar 10, 2010 - people film music festivals weddings memorialss

"As the People's Republic of China celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2009, the country's film industry continued to flourish with record-setting blockbusters. Anniversary tribute film ""The Founding of a Republic"", for example, took little effort to become the highest-grossing Chinese-language film ever. In the meantime, top Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou was back after a three-year absence from the big screen, although his latest work was not favored by all. Globally, the year 2009 has given us big surprises with such sensations as Susan...

Ahhhhh, finally back in Finland, to the land of email and communication! Hmmmn so what have the last 4 weeks entailed for Will and I on our Scandinavian adventure?.... ah yes we had just arrived in Tampere. Its the easter long weekend as we arrive so we are lucky enough to have our own personal tourguide for the weekend, Mr Jokinen.
