Not a lot to say here. Helsinki is a nice city, and the Finns fine people, but the place seems a bit lacking after some of the other cities I've visited on this trip. ... Getting from Prague to Helsinki was an all-day affair. ... When I originally planned this adventure, I had a nice, neat direct flight from Prague on Czech Airlines that would have taken 2 hours and gotten me into Helsinki with the better part of the day left to sightsee. ... Hello everyone (Hei kaikille as they say in Finland), I caught the first flight of this trip ok, and I am now in Helsinki, waiting for my connection to Beijing! The vegetarian meal on the plane was surprisingly good, and that it is great newsas I am flying with Finnair tonight too and the veggie meals are normally appalling! We woke to a seascape where it was difficult to determine where the sea ended and the sky began. We went for breakfast and as we ate, some rocky islands appeared and the ship began to back into Helsinki port. ... We are rudely awoken at 7am by a knock on the door, we have docked and its time to jump ship! I quickly get up wincing in pain as a series of red hot pokers stab through my skull. The next day we explore the capital city, Helsinki. ... Welcome Back - In response to requests I have a few things to say about food - especially pastries and coffee at those little European cafes. My favorite place to eat in Helsinki is The Soup Kitchen (no jokes about my homelessness, please!)in the Old Market Hall down by the docks. ... The churches, especially the "Rock Church" in Helsinki, are enjoyable to visit as well. ... DAY 31-33: Helsinki and Environs We have, despite the constant threat of rain, really enjoyed Finland. ... It feels very familiar to us, from the streets of downtown Helsinki to the rocks of Suomenlinna Fortress to the familiar landscapes of suburban Helsinki. ... Sitting now in the Helsinki airport waiting for our flight to Frankfurt, there are Olympics playing on all the TVs and internet access everywhere. ... As we drove through the burbs to get here it all seemed like home but with different business names! The landscape here seems to be like a cross between Muskoka, Yellowknife, Sudbury and Thunder Bay :) It is really quite comfortable, and we would like to come back and explore the country some more, beyond the city of Helsinki. ...
