Feb 14, 2006 - Fiji- 2003

Nick and I stayed in Fiji for about 1 month en route to Australia. We spent about 2 weeks at the Nananu Lodge on the island of Nananu-I-Ra and then circled around the mainland. We met up with a Fijian guy named Pisa and ended up staying with him and his buddy's on the beach of the Coral Coast at their house. They threw a huge birthday party for me with a lovo (underground traditional oven) and of course a kava (traditional drink made from ground up yaquona root mixed with water) session that lasted into the wee hours of the morning.

Jan 25, 2006 - The Fiji highlands

Went into the centre of main land Fiji and met the chief of a small village. The housing was very basic (corigated iron roofs etc) and one phone stuck in the centre of the village. We had a Kava ceremony for his to welcome us to the village and 'bless us' for our visit. But he must have had his fingers crossed when he did it, because that's when the rain started! We got drenched on a walk to the local waterfall, and Gary went for a swim...as did I effectively!! Met loads of little Fiji people who wanted to shake hands with us! We're very...

Gone Gallivanting

Aug 4, 2005 - Back in Touristville and Shark City

We are just about to check out after 2 nights at a beachside, very nice, but completely package holiday resort along the coral coast where we have been having some R+R (actually we have had 2 and a bit months of R+R, but this is proper R+R, if that makes sense). Realise that Fiji is a bit like Spain for the Aussies and Kiwis and that most of them don't have a clue of what lies outside their luxury resort. Great swimming pool with lethal waterslide that everyone hurt themselves on badly the first time, but the boys have all mastered and come...

Aug 1, 2005 - Birthday in Fiji

Bula! Your 2 favourite travelers have arrived at their 1st checkpoint on their own amazing race. Fiji is as beautiful and friendly as we remember it to be. Our plane rides were surprisingly uneventful with our luggage and ourselves arriving at the same time. We arrived on Chris' birthday and as a birthday treat we went to a spectacular orchid garden. She was in heaven. You can get a glimpse of a few of the many types of orchids there in the pictures section. So after that we traveled down the coast to our accommodation for our time here....

May 31, 2005 - Fiji

This was to be our last pit stop on the way home to top up our tans before returning to the motherland! We arrived in Fiji early evening, not really knowing what to expect but hoping the weather was good, and it was back to the lovely warm weather we had be come accustom to! Our first mission was to find some accommodation, the information booth pointed us in the direction of someone who could help us, and the lady was very nice and went through a lot of options and decided to head down to Sigatoka on the Coral Coast. We didn't have any...

Nanny Goat on tour !

May 22, 2005 - Coral Coast, Fiji

We spent 4 nights on the Coral Coast, on the south side of Fiji's main island. Our travelling pace has been fast and as there is not a lot see here we had a chance to stop and process the trip. During this time we made the difficult decision to not visit Samoa. Samoa was one of the countries we were most looking forward to seeing. A few years ago United Nations declared it one of the world's least developed countries. Samoa appealed to us because of its untouched beauty and culture. With our air pass we had a flight out, but not into...

Apr 30, 2005 - Fiji - Beachcomber Island

Well after a whistle stop tour of OZ and NZ I was a bit knackered to say the least. So I booked 4 nights at a party island to recover!!! Not sure what I was thinking so although there were late nights I did nothing all day. It took me 4 days just to walk around the island ...it took a whole 5 minutes! I really just needed a break plus a good girly book to recharge my batteries.....Fiji didn't disappoint. Not alot to do except kayak, snorkeling, drink and eat....and eat....and eat! All meals were included so i felt I might as well get my...

Mellons on the Move

Mar 6, 2005 - Fiji #2 - Robinson Crusoe Island.

Right, promise I wont mention that I had my CAMERA STOLEN!! Oops! Spent first two days feeling soooooooo pissed off, almost pulled my flights forward and came home! Well, as I missed my flight from Auckland which meant the next departure for the Fiji bus is Monday, I now had a day to kill. SO, went to the Robinson Crusoe Island for a couple of dives. It was the first time I saw a shark up close. I was happily glidin along looking at the reef when the instructor signalled to me to look to my left. About 5 meters away a 2 metre Grey Shark was...

Feb 8, 2005 - "Feejee Experience" - Day 1

Day 1: Nadi to Crows Nest My expectation before embarking on a bus tour called the "Feejee Experience" was that it was going to be a tourist's view of Fiji. I guess it was sort of that, but not like I had expected. This was a mixture of adventure-style activities and cultural activities (and fund-raising), but in the relative safety of a well-worn tourist path. We started the trip today spending a couple of hours over lunch at what John, our 23-year-old tour guide, called the best beach in Fiji, Natadola beach. Afterwards, we drove a half...

Where's Phil?

Jan 25, 2005 - Hideaway Resort, Fiji

We have completed the first stage of our trip having spent eight days at the Hideaway Resort (www.hideawayfiji.com) on Fiji's Coral Coast. Things started badly with the bag with all Laura's clothes in being lost in transit between Los Angeles and Nadi. It turned up three days later having somehow managed to find it's way to Auckland. The locals blamed incorrect tagging by BA at Heathrow but we prefer to think it was an American cock up in LA. Anyway it all worked out OK in the end and Laura got a few extra clothes which the insurance...

Dec 19, 2004 - More First week in Fiji,

We three were escorted through the rainforests by a local guide from the village, he spent a great deal of time explaining what all the local plants were used for. His Dad starting teaching him at the age of 5, now he has begun teaching his children.... Every night we were treated with a diferent spectacular sunset. the shark photo was the first for me, either a brown whaler or a white tip, either way they are not aggressive, it will be a bit different in Oz. home of the tiger and great whites, more to come... bus travel is the cheapest and...

Itchy Feet

Oct 16, 2004 - Fiji Fun

Bolla! That is the greeting we have heard from all the locals here on the wonderful island. We arrived in Nadi, Fiji after a long ALL NIGHT flight from L.A. and actually lost a whole day in the time zone switches. Our best thinking was to make up for the lost day by not trying to sleep and jumping into Fijian culture as quick as possible. One word descibes it best OVERWHELMING! We saw sights and learned lessons on day one of the international legs of our trip that will last with us the whole trip. Nothing scary both Moms (don't worry)...
