Apr 30, 2018 - Lautoka

We were in Fiji about a month ago. A few days after we left we saw stories on the news about the devastating floods in Nadi, the town where the international airport is located, a few miles away from Denarau where we stayed. We saw video of people floating down the main street in rafts and using power boats to rescue people stranded in the rising water. They got 18” of rain in twenty-four hours. Two weeks later another equally large storm passed through, before they got a chance to recover from the first one. When the story disappeared from...

Feb 10, 2015 - Lautoka, Fiji

Pete had a fine visit in Lautoka. The weather was nice, with temperatures in the 80's. He enjoyed getting outside off the ship a little bit. His job responsibilities are going well, although he is quite a bit busier with his scheduling and other jobs. He is feeling very confident about assuming the Music Director responsibilities in a few weeks because he has already been doing most of the job.

Jan 18, 2015 - Lautoka, Fiji

Pete had the day off in Lautoka so he was taking it pretty easy. He didn't have any real plans when we spoke to him but the weather was fine and he had been off the ship. After two days in the Fiji ports, they were headed out to sea for the long trip back to Sydney. Everything is going very well for him right now.

Jan 10, 2015 - Lautoka, Fiji

We took a water taxi to the town of Lautoka, Fiji and walked through the streets for several hours. Then we had a taxi driver do a little tour for the two of us out to a village, to coffee factory, through the country side and then to the part of town that held the Parliment and President's house. It was a very interesting glimspe at how hard it is to make a living in these towns and how expensive real housing is because so many foreigners are buying it to have a second home or create a resort type of setting for tourist. The water taxi...

Dec 25, 2014 - Lautoka, Fiji

Pete spent Christmas Day in Fiji, which is so far away from Indianapolis that he was almost to the International Date Line. The time there is 18 hours ahead of us in Indianapolis so his Christmas was almost over before ours began! He has not received his Christmas box from us yet but did celebrate Christmas with his friends on the ship. The Music Director, David, had a party in his cabin, which Pete enjoyed very much. There were some special activities on the ship for which the band played, including the arrival of Santa Claus! As of today,...

Feb 2, 2014 - Lautoka, Fiji

2/2 – 2/5 After 896 miles and two sea days we made it to Lautoka, Fiji. Well, maybe it took three sea days, it depends on your point of view. On Sunday, February 2 at 2:00am we crossed the International Date Line. So our Sunday only lasted two hours before it became 3:00am Monday morning (yup, we watched the Superbowl on Monday). However, not to worry, every four or five days throughout the trip we kept putting the clock back an hour and by the time we returned to Fort Lauderdale were all caught up (caught back) and had gained a whole days...

Jan 31, 2010 - Lautoka, Fiji

Good Morning, to a day ahead of you in the US (we totally lost January 30, 2010) and other parts of the world (for those of you that are west of us & not in Fiji), it's that international dateline thing that confounds, confuses the best of us in explaining the logic of it but you may think of it when we experience New Year's eve and the parts of the world that celebrate the new year ahead of all others. That is where we are! For all the "rough" sailing we've just gone through, we could also be in a time warp, worm hole, or a "Pacific...

Mar 28, 2007 - Fiji - Yasawa Islands - Naviti

The Yasawa Flyer didn't arrive till 1pm so we spent the morning relaxing in a hammock enjoying the blue skies and sunshine. Debs joined one of the islands hosts called Nelson, in a weaving lesson on the beach. It wont be long before she starts knitting sweaters! After lunch at the school canteen, with pretty reasonable fare this time, we boarded the Yasawa Flyer and headed 30min south to Naviti Island, roughly mid-way along the Yasawa islands and one of the largest and highest of the group. Here we were met by the staff and some guests of...

Jun 4, 2006 - Manta Ray Bay Eco-style resort

After a good sleep (the only one in Fiji that I would have air conditioned) and breakfast (strangely without garlic) it was off for a full-on sunbathe on deck while half the boat went looking for Manta Rays. Annoyingly they found some, and spent 1/2 hour chasing after them, which must have been amazing. Sadly, it was all too soon to move off the boat. After another garlic lunch we packed and got on the sister-ship for the short jaunt to Manta Ray Bay Resort. Following the customary welcome song as we found ourselves in a new-looking resort,...
