Aug 7, 2008 - Paradise Fiji

Finau organised a trip to Mana Island in the Mamanuca group for us. The beauty of Fiji is along all the islands off the mainland, so as it was Tara's birthday approaching, we decided to celebrate a bit. Within ten minutes of catching our boat, Tara's hat was in the water! Luckily the driver was nice and turned the boat around for her to get it. The first island we saw on the way to Mana was beachcomber - it was so small and so unbelievable! Although this is the party island of Fiji, it was still beautiful, and we were glad we weren't...

Jul 20, 2008 - Wanna Taki

Couple of days later and our next stop was the Wanna Taki cruise. The sea was so blue and clear it wasn’t long before we were jumping off the sides and making use of the onboard kayaks. At night we were treated to some entertainment, including crab racing. I bought a large but ultimately indecisive crab called Jeremy. He was probably the fastest of the lot but couldn’t seem to grasp the concept that he was supposed to leave the circle to win, not do laps of it.

Grand Day Out

Jul 18, 2008 - Tavewa Island

It did take a little adjusting to get used to life after Vorovoro. I was so used being around people and my first night in Nadi was so different. I had a sixteen bed dorm to myself, which is of course a good thing – it just felt strange. Especially when I heard one of the other hotels having a culture night with traditional songs I recognised being blasted out through speakers with drum beats and synth sounds added to them. Not quite the Fiji I had gotten used to. Anyway it wasn’t long before I was sailing through the Yasawas to start a...

Grand Day Out

Jun 1, 2008 - Nanuya Island Resort...

Up early to pay our tab... Had to actually head out to the ship to pay up, then got shuttled back to shore. Funny...guests also had to head out to the ship...they were heading back to Nadi on the ship (while we're taking a ferry further norht in the chain). After getting under way...they sent the launch back to the beach 3 times to either pickup or send back items they'd forgotten to offload or pack. We met our shuttle later on and headed up to Nanuya. The new resort is beautiful. excellent beach, Snorkeling and PADI-approved dive center....

Fiji 2008

May 31, 2008 - Maira Village

Visited a village on a neigboring island today. Experienced a very different kava ceremony along with dancing, music and even an opportunity (surprise) to get a few trinkets. Earlier in the day, we also had the chance to find our how to weave traditional baskets and how to husk coconuts. Tonight in the main lodge was also a talent night of sorts with competitors split by nationality. We did the US proud (Drift Away by Dobie Grey), but in the end the context was declared a five-way tie. Evening ended with a bonfire on 'sunset beach'... Back...

Fiji 2008

May 30, 2008 - Barefoot @ Drawaqa...

Lovely island! We're on tbe 'sunset beach' side. Winds wip up @ night...to 20 knots or so...sounds wild in the dark. Very cool to see all of the stars @ night w/o any light pollution. My first time below the equator...and one of the guests (Tom, sheep farmer from Australia) showed my how to find the Southern Cross constellation and use if to find True South. Took the ship out to another island from snorkeling and some hand-line fishing (Renee calls this 'playing with a sock'--their version of getting the kids to keep themselves occupied...

Fiji 2008

Nov 27, 2007 - Mana Island

We left Malolo island on a small speedboat and headed off around the island to connect with a bigger ferry. The transfer from the small boat to the bigger one was very slightly hairy as the bigger ferry did not actually stop, only slowed down a bit, and the speedboat was tiny beside the bigger boat. Anyway once on board it was a quick half hour journey to our next destination, Mana Island. The boat docked at a large jetty and our bags were taken from us and we were put into a golf buggy and driven to the reception area of the resort. The...

Oct 12, 2007 - MOET - The Afterglow

I've been off of Moet for about a week now and still every other word out of my mouth has to do with life on the boat. I must be a complete bore to everyone I talk to, but they seem to ask questions and most are intrigued by the idea...so, until the joys of sailing life wear off, I'll continue to bask in the afterglow. The best part of the trip....the people. The worst part of the trip....the toilet situation. My favorite island....Kuata. My favorite resort...Octopus. What I like best about boat life....the adventure. What I like least...

Aug 16, 2007 - Beachcomber Island

Wow!! .... Ok, so yeah I left Mantaray for beachcomber in the hope of finding some form out party and the odd cool person to hang out with for my Birthday, little did I know then what I would be letting myself in for!! Now there are stories here that I'm really not sure whether I should share, however what kind of a journal would that be, plus how many people are even reading this by now .. although I have pretty much ruined any chances with anyone back home if they are!! So lets crack on, I get off the boat at Beachcomber around 5ish,...

Murray's On Tour !!

Aug 7, 2007 - The Yasawa Islands

Well I headed out on my 2 week Bula island hopping pass, and basically had paid fort an accomodation pass aswell which includes a list of resorts where I could stay for no additional charge with exception of drinks, etc. However these resorts are more basic, the food is worse etc so I decided to check out Oarsmans Bay first and pay the extra... 1st two days it rained, great!! However the day I left it really brightened up and the bay was absolutely stunning, basically paradise. That said I was quite happy to leave there after 2 days as it...

Mar 26, 2007 - Fiji - Yasawa Islands - Nanuya Lai Lai

The next morning after realising how much cash we had paid to the travel agent at the airport we were relieved to see the shuttle bus arrive and take us to Denarau Island Marina to check in for our island-hopping tour. The Yasawa group of islands are situated on the west coast of Fiji, this chain of 20 ancient islands are famous for their crystal blue lagoons, rugged volcanic landscapes and some of the Pacifics most beautiful beaches. This whole area is still relatively undeveloped and is a backpacker mecca. Everyone here in Fiji works to...

Feb 20, 2007 - Bula from Fiji

Had a great time in Fiji, visited Suva and stayed with an old school friend - Kevin Fraser and his family (Mara, Courtney, Cory, Alexander and Aiden). For those of you that remeber Kevin from days of old - he is now Mr Hockey here in Fiji, being variously Fiji Coach, Club Player, National Player and Vice President of Fiji Hockey.... A few beers in the heart of Suva and a catch up with the locals and the Fiji Bitter saw some dodgey heads next morning..... which was just the stuff to catch the return Taxi bus to Nadi on top of - I swear...
