Jul 22, 2008 - South Sea Island

Well the final island was the smallest. South Sea island is basically just a beach in the middle of the South Pacific. It is tiny. You can walk all the way around it in ten minutes. It was a nice way to end the trip, even though the manager was very scary and kept on shouting at us for talking over her. (She decided that if she talked over you then you were talking over her meaning you had to try and guess when she was about to talk to avoid a ticking off.) We had a fun last night with a final drinking session for the trip. During which I...

Grand Day Out

Jul 21, 2008 - Kuata

Kuata was probably my favourite place to stay in the Yasawas so far. The facilities weren’t the best but what really made it was the fact that the resort was run by a local village on the island, which actually reminded me quite a lot of Vorovoro. I keep on comparing every place I visit here to it, and of course it doesn’t match up – which doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy my experience at all. I got stuck in straight away in getting to know the locals through a game of touch rugby. I was, of course, dismal, and I think more of a hindrance to my...

Grand Day Out

Jun 14, 2008 - Mango Bay

It felt finally good to escape my hotel and finally do some proper travelling. So first we were led to Nadi Town, which is – well quaint. Still we managed to find a really good fresh fruit and veg market where I managed to get about 20 bananas for dirt cheap. And we all know how I like to save money (sorry Jo, but I did go for two entries without mentioning money). After that we headed to my first beach of the holiday and it was ace. The sea water felt more like a bath than anything else. The waves were pretty good so we all grabbed some...

Grand Day Out

May 29, 2008 - Denereau MarinaTo Drawaqa...

Departed Crusoe's Retreat @ 6am for drive to Denarau harbor and the Spirit of the Pacific for our cruise to Drawaqa (Dra-wanga). Snorkeled and lunched along the way and arrived @ 4pm @ the Barefoot Lodge. Dinner and drinks and then...lights out! This is a primitive facility with no electric (except the refridgeration) and no fresh water (rainwater for now...then shipped-in as more is required later in the season). The grounds are beautiful and our bure (boo-ray or hut) is right on the beach.

Fiji 2008

May 28, 2008 - Paddling the Upper Navua

Bula! This is a quick entry, since we headed out at 6:30am for a day of river rafting on the Upper Navua River, in the mountains of Viti Levu, and just got back, it's now 6pm - and happy hour! - and we are ready to relax. Beautiful day on the water. Dale and I both got tossed at one point - probably more because I catapulted in his direction and took him with me. We were in the front, so it's not unusual that happened. Very wet day, lots of splashing between the three rafts on the water, LOTS of waterfalls. The Upper Navua is an absolutely...

Fiji 2008

May 27, 2008 - Catching up from Crusoe's Retreat (Namaqumaqua Village, Viti Levu)

Today (Tues 5/27) we arrived at Crusoe's Retreat, which is back on the mainland of Viti Levu. Once we landed in Nadi on Thursday morning, we were taken to the small island of Beqa...and you have to REALLY want to go there! Very remote, it's a premier dive resort. Did we, as non-divers, know this? Of course not! Leave it to Renee again to look for "remote"! Anyway - connecting there not a reality. So here's a big dump to catch up: Thurs 5/22-Take a windy 2.5 hour ride to a dock in the middle of nowhere - driver says "wait here for boat"....

Jan 29, 2008 - Fiji - "You call this a storm"

Tim: Few hurdles to jump over but we're off. First flight in the series got cancelled but after a quick trouble shoot we made it to Fiji and had an incredible first day. Beachcomber island was exactly what we were looking for to start off our trip with a sand bottom bar, white sand beach going all the way around the island and cute Aussie's running around everywhere. The 2nd and 3rd day turned out a little different when a decent size cyclone came whizzing by over head. Little freaky being on an island (elevating 8ft) that you can walk...

Long Way Round

Nov 30, 2007 - Bounty Island

Our last Fijian island was called "Bounty" Island and although not being the place where they filmed the ads for Bounty chocolate/coconut bars, it was the place where they filmed "Celebrity Love Island," that awful UK reality tv show. The island itself was the best we had seen, with the exception of the island where the movie "Castaway" was filmed (but then we couldn't stay on that one). At just over half a kilometer wide it was quite small and was completely surrounded by a sandy beach and a large coral reef just offshore. It was a...

Nov 25, 2007 - Malolo Island

After half an hours journey on a ferry boat we were dropped off at a nice resort where we were to get our connection to the "Funky Fish" resort where we were staying. Our new boat was a tiny, old speedboat and soon we were skimming over the waves beside the island. On landing we then climbed into the back of an old trailer that was then pulled along the beach and up a small hill to where reception was by a tractor! Quite bizarre. The resort was built by a former member of the New Zealand All Blacks and when we were there was very quiet....

Oct 7, 2007 - Sailing on Moet - Fiji

I've finally returned to civilization after a month of sailing throughout the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands in Fiji. Surprisingly, not every place on this earth is blessed (or cursed) with internet availability. These islands were the perfect getaway from the rush of the "real world". I joined "Yacht Moet" on Sept 6th where we set sail for a month long tour of some of the most picturesque Fijian islands. There were 6 1/2 of us on board Moet...6 adults and 3-year old Dylan who was raised at sea and will finally get to live in his first house...

Sep 25, 2007 - Treasure Island back to Nadi

Having recovered from my stomach problems I spent a quiet day yesterday on the beach reading. It was enjoyable doing nothing for a time and even though my stomach was in better shape, I certainly didn't have a lot of energy to get active. This morning I packed up my stuff once again, checked out of Treasure Island and headed to the dock for the quick rendezvous with the same high speed catamaran that had dropped me off on Saturday. However this time, instead of the fairly quick return trip to the mainland, I discovered that the boat simply...
