Year 6: Pole To Pole

Oct 11, 2006 - Africa: Ethiopia part 2..Lalibela to Aksom

Lalibela,Ethiopia..12000 ft high, steep canyons, mt plateaus, oldest of the Ethiopian communities, original indigenous hill tribes living as they did 3000 yrs ago, very poor, lots of begging for soccer balls, school books, pens, uniforms, mostly from high school students. i bought them 2 soccer balls and enough for one uniform and becaame an instant town celebrity. Word spread fast and I was warmly greeted all over the village. It is a true african experience here w/o the animals. Just a lot of donkeys, sheep, cows, and goats. On Sat....

Sunday, October 30, 2005. Aksum, Ethiopia. Aksum lies in northern Ethiopia and was once the capital of Ethiopia. Here the attractions are the granite monoliths (called steles), underground tombs, and monasteries. Fred, Charles, Hamish (a New Zealander whom we met at Africa Hotel), and I spent the day visiting, in order, the Archaeological Museum, the Northern Stelae Park, the Queen of Sheba's Bath, King Ezana's Inscription, the Tombs of Kings Kaleb and Gebre Meskel, and the Abba Pentalewon Monestary.
