Nov 8, 2012 - San Salvador- El Salvador
El Salvador A fleeting visit. A relatively short 6 hr bus ride to San Salvador but we would have happily ridden the Pullman tour coach all day and all night. More mod cons, comfort and free food! Than Ryanair and easy jet put together. Comfy first class reclining seats and movies in englis with headphones. So we were a bit too relaxed and squishy round the edges to hit San Salvador. A major city, hotas you like and at least 7 people taking to you at any one time. Taxis were advisable everywhere. We ventured to ' centre historico' but it...

Jan 10, 2012 - Suchitoto, El Salvador (full day)
Dawn & I decided that perhaps part of my issue was that my poor sleeping had gotten me run down and likely had made my immune system more vulnerable. So, for today we didn't set the alarm and were content to miss our included breakfast if we were able to sleep in. As it turned out, I slept straight through to 10am, apart from waking up long enough to turn the ac on. Awesome! Felt way better. Dawn was up before me and nearly ready to go before I ever got in the shower, so we made plans to meet at the church later & go for an early lunch. The...

Jan 9, 2012 - Suchitoto, El Salvador (via Ilobasco)
We all made an effort to be far more considerate with our 5-something wake ups and 6am departure than the uni kids had been the night before. Guy was very apologetic to hear that Dave had been sleeping through all the drunken festivities by the pool until he head Guy yelling at them. Oops! I stuck to a banana for breakfast, and was watching to see how that went. The long horrible ride to the border with El Salvador wasn't much fun, but we got through the border process more quickly than Lou said it usually takes. On the other side we...

May 30, 2011 - They had problems with their father's law. They sleep in the back
And the leaves that are green turn to brown, And they wither with the wind, And they crumble in your hand. This is the way I always dreamed it would be The way that it is, oh oh When you are holding me I never had a love of my own Maybe that's why when we're all alone I can hear music I can hear music The sound of the city baby seems to disappear I can hear music Sweet sweet music Whenever you touch me baby Whenever you're near Lovin' you It keeps me satisfied And I can't explain, oh no The way I'm feeling inside You look at me we kiss and...

May 25, 2011 - all these towns look the same to me the movies and the factories
or should that be the shopping malls and the shanty towns...here in San Salvador...it seems you can have 250 shop malls and another smaller one 60-70 shops next door to one another with an 8 cinepolis cinema ...El Salvador is $USD 150 a week....but a third of the population lives well below that..in poverty....a monument reads "the greatest gift a man can have is a the right to a free vote..." while nearby down the median strip of a major thoroughfare is a pop art installation of 6 huge coke bottles painted in garish colours...the current...

Feb 22, 2011 - El Salvador
EL SALVADOR: SHORT & STICKY (Day 27 – 31) We arrived in El Tunco, El Salvador, fairly late in the evening- having taken a bus, with Jason and Chloe, from Lake Atitlan to Antigua and from Antigua on through to El Salvador. We were dropped in El Tunco and wandered around trying to find accommodation- without much success! Our charms finally paid off though when we landed our bums in the butter with an offer for an awesome four bed self catering spot that seemed brand new and cheap. There’s no doubt that it was a deal on the side from the...

Feb 9, 2011 - El Salvador
The 5th Feb we went on an epic trip from Antigua to Guatemala City, then on to San Salvador. We had more issues with our hop on hop off bus pass as they told us incorrect pick up times twice so we wasted our last morning in Antigua. When we got to Guatemala City we were taken to a bus station that had two heavily armed guards to protect the passengers and bus - crazy. We arrived in San Salvador after dark so squashed ourselves into a taxi with another 3 backpackers and found a hotel. We decided not to spend the next couple of nights in the...

Nov 12, 2010 - Day 12
Day 12 - Layover in La Libertad, El Salvador We never left the hotel grounds. This place has everything we need today – except hot water (nobody has hot water here (why?)) and internet (all the copper cable has been stolen forcing an undergrounding project that may take a while). There’s no international cell service, either. We feel totally out-of-touch with our families and, even though we warned of the unknown, feel the need to make a connection as soon as possible tomorrow. So, we relaxed, caught up on our “paperwork,” charted some trip...

Nov 11, 2010 - Day 11
Day 11 - Panajachel, Guatemala to La Libertad, El Salvador Starting Odometer: 32370 Miles traveled today: 220 The ride out was almost as enjoyable as when we arrived, passing the same road conditions in the cool morning sun filtering through the canopy. We’re layered up – mostly in preparation for the rain that never came. Everything was waterproofed just in case. We knew it was cold but never felt it. As we descended toward the flatlands and the coastal area, it got warmer and clearer. We were happy to stop for our daily ration of fruit,...
