I've always wanted to visit the gold mining town of Zaruma. It is known as the wooden town set atop gold and is located a few hours southeast of Machala. I visited the Turner Museum where I learned that this area has been known to be rich in gold since Inca and Canari times. Then Spain discovered the riches of this part of Ecuador and the rest is history. The museum mostly focused on The Zaruma Gold Reef Mining Company from Great Britain and the South American Development Company from Texas which began mining the area in 1896. There were...
