Just an hour up the coast from Salinas is the village of Valdivia. There you'll find a small community-owned museum where a guide explains the 1960 excavation of a burial ground of the Valdivia civilization. Among the shards of pottery and spondylus shells, the currency for trade of the time, we learned about a civilization that existed here around 5900 B.C. Afterwards, we went to the neighboring town of Ayangue for a seafood lunch on the beach and finally one last night in the balcony bar at Chesco's.
