Sigsig: Is a small town about 1 hour from Cuenca. There is a women's coop here that makes the beautiful Panama hats. Women come to the coop and take the toquilla, a reed that grows along the rivers, and weave it into hats. The hats are taken back to the coop warehouse where they are finished and customized. There are many more choices in styles here and the ladies will add whatever band or decorations asked for and can fix the size. Michael Karsh invited me to join him on an excursion to Sigsig, about 40 miles from Cuenca. Most tourists visit Gualaceo, Chordeleg, and Sigsig all in one day. We liked Sigsig so well that we spent all of our time there. What surprised me about Sigsig was all of the new construction I saw. I expected a quaint little village. For some reason, 4-story apartment buildings, modern in design, are being built everywhere. Some say the financing is coming from Ecuadorians who live in the US.
