Fra Riobamba til Alausi/Sibambe med tog / skinnebus. Vi havde glaedet os til denne dag, hvor vi skulle koere med tog paa en af de mest beroemte jernbanestraekninger der er konstrueret. Hele straekning var et meget ambitioest projekt der blev igangsat i 1898, og skulle loebe mellem de vigtigste byer i Ecuador / Guayaguill og Quito. Det tog 3 aar inden anlaeggelsen naaede til Sibambe hvor de stoedte paa det kaempemaessige klippestykke El Nariz del Diablo - Djaevelens naese. Denne ene straekning, der ikke er saerligt langt det tog vel 40...

Oct 30, 2005 - Baños, Riobamba and Alausi, Ecuador Oct. 29 to 30

Saturday, October 29, 2005: We arrived in Baños last night just before night fall. Baños is closer to the jungle, so the climate is a little more temperate than in the mountains. Baños is a very popular tourist destination for Ecuadorians. Some of the main tourist attractions are the hot springs, active volcano (the city was evacuated during 1999), rafting and waterfalls. Of course there are plenty of restaurants and bars to waste away the night in as well. We decided to visit the hot springs last night to relax our sore and tired muscles....

Apr 27, 2005 - Riobamba>>Sibambe, Ecuador... Train to the Devil's Nose

It turned out I was actually better getting up at 6am than 8am! We walked over to the train station and were greeted by people renting us brown cushions. Apparently we needed it on the roof, as it was hard and metallic. There were also the usual food vendors selling snacks, though I was chuffed that knew enough about local prices and equipped with enough Spanish to counter against one of them trying to rip me right off. Hah! Wasn't quite sure what to expect from the train, but Iris heaved a huge sigh of relief when she saw that there were...

Yat's Big Trip

Dec 11, 2004 - Riobamba

The only reason I am here is for the train ride. The city is intriguingly dull and boring. It is OK for shopping, but nothing spectacular until you can see the highest peaks in the country, which surround the city. However, most of the time there is cloud and you cannot see anything. Still, my hostel is nice, except for the viscious Llama in the courtyard- he spits at me every time I walk past him. He is even worse if you actually try and talk to him or go near- then he runs around in circles spitting at you.
