Mar 27, 2019 - Day 33

Went down to the dining room for breakfast at 7:30am. Miryam told me we could go to the shop to learn how to make Panama hat at 9:30am. I asked to go at 10:30am because I would like to go the Pumapungo Museum to buy a rock-climbing guide book in Ecuador for Eric. According to some travel guide book it is only sold in their store. I walked towards it. Normally it takes about 20minutes along the trail by the river. When I got very close, I had to shift to city street. I saw a group of people were standing by the road and talking. I took a...

Mar 26, 2019 - El Panecello

We were up bright and early to walk to San Francisco Plaza to catch the hop on hop off bus. On the way we saw a riot squad gathering but no apparent problems. We stopped to talk to 2 tourista police who spoke English. Here in Quito finding people who speak English is rare. Mostly people who speak English are from Venezuela. Our Spanish is still pocito. I find my vocabulary has decreased but am able to formulate simple sentences. We continued on to Plaza San Francisco continually looking for the bus stop. We asked people but no one seemed to...

Mar 25, 2019 - Plaza Grande

Today was basically a rest day however we found ourselves in a huge shopping mall with 2 big courtyards...covered with plexiglass. Covered atria/courtyards are common here. We were not shopping but looking for Correos Ecuador...the post office. We had an excellent lunch and then walked to the Plaza Grande. We picked up a book of maps for driving the country and some info. Music started to play as in a live band. We wandered into the plaza and were told by tourists from Boston that it was the changing of the palace guards. The palace...

Mar 24, 2019 - Mitad del Mundo

Today we left at 11a to go see Mitad del Mundo. This was once supposed to be the center of the earth however has since been proven to be off by 8 degrees. First we went to Pululala. It is a village in the crater of an active crater. As you will see in the picture smoke and vapors still rise from the volcano. It last erupted in 1995. There are small fields evident but no rivers. As the name suggests water is gathered from the clouds. A netting is placed over a large vat. Water vapor condenses onto the net and falls into the vat. This takes...

Mar 24, 2019 - Otavalo and the Solar Clock

Very early we caught our bus to Otavalo along with 5 other Canadians, 4 Australians, 2 Norwegian ladies, and a Mexican gentleman. Our tour guide, Fernando, and driver, Nixon, both spoke English as well as Spanish. After we were all picked up, we headed north out of Quito which seemed to go on forever. Fernando said 80 kms north to south and 40 kms wide....a big city. Once up over the mountain and out into the countryside we took the Pan American Highway a short distance over another mountain. We drove through small postage stamp size farms...

Mar 22, 2019 - Catedrals and Plazas

Today we explored some of the historic district of Quito. We first went to Plaza Grande to book some tours. We discovered a chocolate store...and tried their thick creamy hot chocolate. It has won awards....and it is delicioso....so thick and sooo creamy and chocolatey. Parara I think it was called. We went from here into the Catedral de Quito that was also a museum. It was ornate with lots of gold used particularly in the altar. There were lots of fine carvings but no stained glass windows. We saw many of the robes worn by the priests and...

Mar 21, 2019 - Quito, Ecuador

Today after a long day of flights and delays we arrived in Quito, Ecuador. In Bogota, our transit city, we talked at length to a computer designer who is working remotely while he travels the world. Quito is a 45 min. Drive from the airport. Our ride was waiting we were glad to see since we were 2 hours late. As we approached Quito we could see it spilling down 3 mountains. We crossed the Chico River some 3000 feet below. We learned there are 5 million people living here. We checked into our hostel on the edge of the Old Town in daylight...

My alarm sounded at 5:30am. Got up and packed the last few things. Went downstairs at 6:00am. My host Mom already had the table set. Mar 9, 2019 - Day 15

It was bright outside when I woke up. It would be a good day to visit the Botanical Garden. Called a Uber and it showed up within 3 minutes. It was a 15 minutes ride. Unfortunately, the garden does not open until 9:00am that is too late to look for birds. But I enjoy the garden any way. Walked around and saw two kinds of Hummingbirds: Violetear and Black Trainbearer. A bright red Summer Tanager was on a branch inside a dense tree. There were also many Great Thrushes and Eared Doves. I found a stream flowing slowly and over some flat stones...

Mar 8, 2019 - Day 14

Today is the last day of my Spanish school. Gisella and I went through my homework. During which she explained the new words and gramma for me all in Spanish. She also played some video to show the meaning of some words and sentences. For example, to show the meaning of the Spanish word Himno she played the Ecuador National Anthem. To my surprise it sounded somewhat similar to Chines Anthem. I started to ask who the composer was and its history. The words were written by an Ecuadorian, but the composer was a Frenchman Antonio Neumane who...

Mar 7, 2019 - Day 13

Still woke up at 6:30am. Got up at 7:00am to have plenty of time to get ready to go to school. Contacted my host Rosa to ask where to deposit garbage and if she could contact my driver Luis to see if he was still available on Sunday morning to send me to airport. Had breakfast with a cup of tea, yogurt drink and a pastry from En Dulce. Heard back from Rosa and she said Luis would not be able to come because he will be out of town in Cuenca. He suggests his cousin to come. Left for school at 8:15am. Gisella continued the holidays from...
