Feb 28, 2008 - GALAPAGOS!!! (San Cristobal Island)

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the capital of the Galapagos, and the town on San Cristobal, is pretty similar to Puerto Ayora - just a little smaller and cheaper (so we didn't have to stay in a basement doing nightly battle with mosquitos!!), and with LOTS of sea lions!!! We nearly fell over them getting off the ferry, and the fishermen have to push them off their boats to go fishing. In the evening, they turn the beach in town into their dormitory, and you can barely see the sand. The males bark, and square off to other males, wrestling with...

Jun 5, 2007 - Ecuador - Galápagos - Isla Lobos & Isla San Cristobal

¡Hola! More sea lions!!! We've seen so many now that they've become part of our routine. We are going to go back home, look around and go "hey, where have all the sea lions gone?". Seriously now, it's amazing to see how fast you grow used to them. Now we just swim with them and sit beside them as if it was the most normal thing in the world to do, completely ignoring their size and actual strength. We even talk to them! And it feels like they understand, or at least you get more of a response from them than you would get from certain humans...

Dec 21, 2006 - Galloping off to the Galápagos

We met the local Adventure Life representative in the Swissôtel lobby after another amazing breakfast. From that point on until we reached the Galápagos there seemed to be more "hurry up and wait" than anything else. A through flight from Quito to the Galápagos would be about an hour and 45 minutes, but AeroGal seems to work on their own schedule rather than the published schedule. At the counter at the gate we heard the clerk say about 15 more minutes for at least a full hour. An hour or so late we were off and winging our way toward...

Oct 3, 2006 - Tauchen vom Feinsten

Aug 21, 2006 - Ecuador: Galapagos, Isla San Cristobal

Hotel: Casa de Nelly: 10.00. I stayed with a couple of Canadians, Megan and Alexis, in a guest apartment that was great. Nice views of the ocean and island. Highlights: Snorkeling trip to Kicker Rock, hikng to Las Tintoreas and snorkeling under the rocks that Darwin first saw and caused him to investigate these islands, hiking to a frigate bird nesting site, getting lost with Nicholas from Cyprus then skinny dipping in the deserted beach with huge waves! Walking around the village.. My time on San Critobal was really my favorite of my...

Jul 17, 2006 - Galapagos San Cristobal Island

This morning we had to get up very early to give us time to find a flight to the Galapagos. We decided we have seen all we needed to see in Quito and were ready for our next move. We arrived at the airport around 6:20am and had to talk to several counters with many people telling us it would not be possible to get on a flight today. Finally they found a flight for us to San Cristobal which is a less populated island leaving at 9:45am. Before we got on the flight we met a girl from New York, who speaks perfect Spanish, and also works at the...

May 7, 2006 - Isla Española - The Galapagos

Arrived at the beautiful beach of Española to find sea lions strewn out the full length of it sunbathing. Male sea lions (bulls) patrolled their territory in the sea keeping a watchful eye out for rival males and tourists who got too close! We took a walk along the beach and then joined the sea lions in sunbathing for while. Other groups took to snorkelling off the beach but with bulls in the water and looking aggressive we decided to give it a miss. Instead or tour guide radioed the panga boat to come and take us to a rock formation about...

Jul 25, 2005 - Isla Lobos

Jul 22, 2005 - Town visit on San Cristóbal Island

We arrived at San Cristóbal, the island I flew into on the 17th. This is where the eight-day cruise ended for 12 of the passengers, where we'd pick up new passengers and where I decided to rent a wet suit for the remainder of the trip! Raoul and I went to the Interpretation Center with the group to get a short history lesson of the islands. There are some wacky stories about people living in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with nothing but the wildlife to keep them company! Raoul and I said goodbye to our new friends, and made our way,...

Jul 17, 2005 - Going to the Galapagos

No one can choose your mountain or tell you when to climb... It's yours alone to challenge at your own pace and time," Patricia J. Hacker-Harber. On July 9, I booked an island cruise of the Galapagos Islands for July 18 through 25. It took a lot of intestinal fortitude, and checking my bank account several times, before I could drop $1,300 on an eight-day cruise. Up until just a few days before I booked the cruise I was convinced I'd leave the continent without seeing its most famous islands. However, after doing some math, I realized I...
