Mar 24, 2018 - Leaving Liana Lodge Today

As we departed the lodge, Jerry and I were both grateful to have experienced the beauty and grandeur of the Amazon rainforest, which has been described as the “lungs of the earth.” Our existence is directly linked to the continued existence of a thriving ecosystem in the Amazon rainforest. If you go to the Amazon, be prepared for heat, humidity and rain. In short, you will likely sweat and get wet. As for mosquitoes, however, I can honestly say that they were never an issue, a pleasant surprise to be sure. The third day we had breakfast and...

Mar 23, 2018 - Nightwalk Jungle Tour

The second day we opted for a demonstration of how to pan for gold (a few little fragments) and fishing with a cast net. Angel our guide was much more adept at both activities than we were. In the afternoon we motored upriver and tubed back to the lodge through two sets of rapids. We bought Pilseners for the boatman and our guide Juan and I floated home with a beer in hand and a smile on my face. After dinner, we ended the day with a night walk by flashlight and headlamp. I saw lizards, salamanders, a tarantula and other spiders, tree...

Mar 22, 2018 - Amazon Adventures

The next morning we took a tour of the animal rescue center. Some of the other animals we got up close and personal with included a caiman (a South American alligator), a giant river otter, monkeys (howler, squirrel, capuchin and owl), an agouti (a large mouse-like rodent the size of a house cat), and an anaconda that was 18 feet long. We returned to the lodge via inner tube. The river was warm and the current was swift. In the afternoon we visited the island of Anaconda and learned about the life in the Kichwa indigenous community. We...

We drove through very green and scenic countryside, over a high pass and then down into the rain forest area and the jungle. We stopped in Misahualli to buy snacks and then at around 2:30pm, headed out towards the eco lodge where we are staying for 3 nights. After...

Mar 27, 2013 - Week 26 - Cotopaxi, Banos, Misahualli (Ecuador)

Our first day in Latacunga we awoke and ate a lovely breakfast in the hostel courtyard before being picked up by our guide (along with a really weird Dutch guy) for a trip to the south face of Volcan Cotopaxi. The trip started with a 2 hour drive to a refuge at 3,500m with spectacular views over the valley. From there we hiked for about an hour and a half to 4,800m alongside a canyon carved by the lava from previous eruptions. The volcano has destroyed Latacunga 3 times over the years and as a result, the town that was initially founded at...
