Aug 22, 2009 - Puerto Lopez

And the adventure continues.... We took the bus to Puerto Lopez....a small beach town which is where tourists generally stay when the visit Malachilla National Park. Where you go if you can´t afford the extreme expense of going to the Galapagos Islands. It was just what we needed after our hard times in Guayaquil. We mostly relaxed...but we took a tour of Isla de Plata, a small island about an hour from shore. It is a tiny peace of the continent which got separated at some point in time. Only migratory and seabirds are found there as there...

May 1, 2007 - Puerto López ( Ecuador )

Jun 20, 2006 - Puerto Lopez and Isla de la Plata

Bui splurged and forked out for a beautiful beach cabin for the four of us. Puerto Lopez was in preparation for the tourist bulge, so lots of restaurants and stores were shut down for renovations. The flock arrives for the summer season in hopes of glimpsing the mating cycle of passing Humback Whales (the same ones that make it all the way up to the Northwest coast of the U.S. Apparently those stunning pictures you see of the whales backflipping out of the water are taken just after the whale has mated: a little jump for joy! We took the...

Jun 20, 2006 - wail season

As we settled in one of the fresh seafood restaurants lining the dusty waterfront of Puerto Lopez we watched the bands kick off to a sparse audience of eager locals and a few chickens casually crossing the road. But this time the fiesta was not football related. This time they were celebrating the very reason we had made the bumpy journey on a bus with no suspension, into this idle fishing town - Whale season. We had met a Canadian couple at our hostel who had been on a whale tour that day. They saw several humpbacks jumping out of the...

Sep 13, 2005 - Puerto Lopez

Sep 5, 2005 - Making a splash

The little monkey's are called marmosets and look cute from a distance, but up close you can see the evil and madness in their eyes. For some reason I can't get any kind of mobile reception in Ecuador. The bus journey here was 6.5 hours (not 3.5), and our little group has now expanded to include a German couple called Jascha and Nina. I am really in my stride on the travelling buzz, and having a really great time most of the time, as new stuff unfolds. Anyway, I was getting extremely desperate for a piss after about five hours into this...

Jun 4, 2005 - Ecuador: Puerto Lopez

This small (and not particularly attractive, hence no pics) fishing village is known for whale watching and being the departure point for visits to the 'Poor Man's Galapagos' - the Isla de la Plata as well as the the Parque Nacional Machilla. Marcus and I reunited here again after not seeing each other for 2 1/2mths whilst he had been on his diving courses and me travelling in Ecuador and although it was lovely to see each other again, it was also here that sadly, we agreed to separate as very good friends. However, we decided to continue...

Jun 3, 2005 - Jipijapa, (Buses are crazy!)

we left crazy guaaya at 9;30 only to sit on a bus and deny 800 vendors for the next 5.5 hours. it is so pretty inbetween cities. the buses are crazy and stop all the time to pick people up and drop off. Every time the bus slows down 3 vendors jump on the bus to sell water, quesadillas, soda, candy, bread, etc. it{s actually kinda nice because we won{t have to stock up on water like we did this bus ride. michael bought a tortilla de mais i bought a weird quesadilla thing. Puerto Lopez is awesome''more on that next.--kerri Yeah the bus ride...

Jun 3, 2005 - Puerto Lopez

As we came down off the mountains to the coast we started to get a little concerned about the lack of places to stay. But you come around this bend in the road and Lopez just jumps out as a thriving little fishing village on the beach. We got into a terrific Hostal the Sol Inn. Nice little bamboo cabaña with hammocks everywhere. Mike ¡¡Oh my gosh this place is amazing!! It{s a little villagey hut that is so cute! we will put pictures of it on the web tomorrow--this place has three internet places with USB ports. yay. And we love it so much...

May 9, 2005 - Puerto López, Ecuador... On the beach again!

After a productive spell in Guayaquill with updating my journal, am off once again to the Pacific coast for the week, to a town called Puerto López. This time, the attraction is the somewhat calmer waters for snorkeling and daily swim. Oh, and study some more from my Spanish self study book too, of course! The bus ride was looong. The length was punctuated with talks with an Ecuadorian professor, who was very very chatty, and would periodically tap me on the arm, and say, "Yat...!" and begin a new conversation, and laugh. Towards the end of...
