Dec 29, 2008 - Dschungel Tour

Jan 4, 2008 - Lago Agrio

Short 30 minute flight to Lago Agrio with nice views of some of the volcanoes heading north and east. It was about 60 in Quito and 70 when we landed here and sunny. Soon it was to be much hotter. A taxi pickup truck took us to the hotel D'Mario. Not bad rooms. Took a hot shower and we went down to a breakfast of coffee, local fruit juice and eggs and small rolls with cheese inside. Then we started our tour. First we just went to a site where Texaco had a small oil platform where the raw oil from at least 8 wells was treated to separate...

Jan 2, 2006 - Quito, Cloud Forest and the end

For the sake of completion, I will add a final entry for my last few days in Ecuador. After the Galapagos, I finally got round to seeing some sites in Quito's old town. Then for New Year's eve, I went to the cloud forest. More wonderful unspoilt nature, and lots of humming birds, and tucans. And tomorrow I head home, so I must get going and finish my packing. My trip was all good - I saw wonderful places and creatures, and I made new friends who provided me with many fun memories. So now I go back to my corner and start saving for the next...

Dec 22, 2005 - Lago Agrio

Dec 10, 2005 - Deep in the Ecuadorian Jungle

La Selva Lodge We spent one night in Quito (a city I will be spending more time in later), and on Wednesday morning, we headed to the jungle. We flew to a place called Colca, a town in the Ecuadorian jungle, then we had a 2 hour boat ride up the Naga river, then we walked through dense rain forest for half an hour, next a canoe up a tributary and then across a lake and finally our jungle lodge appeared. Well, I just loved the whole experience from the start. I hadn't thought much about what I should expect in the jungle, I was preoccupied...

Sep 27, 2004 - Rain forest - Cauyabena

We arrived at Lago Agrio the night before the jungle tour. It´s not a very nice place - a real dump actually. And people weren´t very friendly either. The hotel was good though. We just walked out on the main street to have dinner and otherwise just stayed in the hotel. Don´t know if we were being overly cautious, but several people had sad that it wasn´t very good to walk around Lago Agrio at night, a lot of seedy people. Also, it is quite close to the Colombian border so there is the occassional guerilla activity. Fortunately we saw...

Sep 14, 2004 - Lago Agrio & Cuyabeno Reserve

$180US for four days in a jungle lodge in the Cuyabeno Reserve in the Oriente or Equadorian amazon. Some of the best dollars I have spent in my journey. The trip was not what I was expecting for two reasons. Firstly 'bucketing', it seems incredible to my highly developed western sense of consumerism that you would go into a travel agent, get shown details of a lodge, activities, location, guides etc, pay for the trip then get taken to a completely different place. But it happens routinely here in Sth America. Where insufficient tourists are...
