Amy Trafton, Fred, and I took a short bus ride from Cuenca to visit Casa de Makana and see how Ikat weaving is done with naural dyes and ancient tie dye methods on a backstrap loom. Then we moved on to the town of Chordeleg where there are countless jewelry stores, literally blocks and blocks of shops. Finally, we stopped at Ecuagenera for a tour of the orchid cultivation center with over 4000 types of orchids.Jump to full entry
Mar 27, 2011 - This little piggy went to market...
Having spent the majority of our weekend holed up in our apartment, we decided to visit some market towns today. We realised as we walked to the bus station in the bright sunshine that we haven’t actually left Cuenca since arriving three weeks ago, so this trip was long overdue. We decided upon two small towns about an hour east of us: Gualaceo, known for its excellent Sunday crafts market and Chordeleg, otherwise known as the ‘jewellery capital’ of the Azuay region.
