Apr 25, 2017 - Another Waterfall Visit

Bob Grady and Frank Johnston had never visited El Chooro de Giron. I contacted a driver with van and five of us were off to see the waterfall yet again. If you tire of seeing my visits to the same places, I hope you can see that the company and the landscape are always changing and entertaining. Lunch at the trout restaurant La Laguna in San Fernando was delicious as usual and Don Victor, the owner, and his wife are wonderful hosts.

Feb 27, 2017 - Giron Cascade and Laguna La Busa

It's been the rainiest week in months in Cuenca but we had to see the cascade. The waterfall at Giron called El Chorro was running fast and furious. Only the bravest of our group, Connie and Gina, made it to the top. Thanks to Jane and Steve Miner for the photos.

Jun 11, 2015 - Back to El Chorro

We boarded a van for another visit to the Treaty Museum in the town of Giron, 25 miles south of Cuenca. After a tour of the museum given by a young enlisted man (compulsory military service at age 18), we tried on a few of the military uniforms of the time and learned about the battle of Giron which gave Ecuador independence from Gran Colombia and Peru. Next stop was a climb to the waterfall at El Chorro. It was a muddy and wet experience and fun to watch Evan Vera, who is 11 years old, scale the rocks and get nearly under the falls which...

Sep 10, 2013 - Waterfall near Giron, Ecuador

Today Regina (friend, host, and landlady) arranged for a van to take seven of us to see the Giron Waterfall. Miguel, the driver and guide and interpreter when needed, charges $7 an hour for the van. We drove about 45 minutes south of Cuenca to Giron, with a quick stop to visit the museum, then on to see the waterfall. There was a little hike and about a 10 degree drop in temperature to the viewing area. With another 30 minute drive we arrived at La Union for a wonderful lunch. There we were joined by several friends of Regina who live in...

Aug 9, 2012 - Yunguilla Valley

Seven of us set out for a day of sightseeing with our driver Miguel Arias. Since he speaks English, Miguel is just the right guide for our day in Yunguilla Valley. Miguel was born in Cuenca but spent years in Queens, NY. He knows the province of Azuay very well and had many interesting facts to share with us during the one-hour ride to our first stop, the little town of Giron. We visited the Museo de Los Tratados and Los Chorros. The museum is located in the house where the peace treaty with Peru was signed on February 27, 1829 drawing up...
