One of them is the stay of La Condamine, one of the leading French scientist of the (first) Geodesic Mission (see Mitad del Mundo in the Quito entry), on La Ciénega in 1742 to observe eruptions of the Cotopaxi. ... The Cotopaxi is also the reason why we are staying at La Ciénega, but since the trip to the volcano takes about five hours we postpone that to the next morning and do a local walk instead. ... “Hi, I’m Marco and I will be your guide today”, we were not aware we had ordered a guide, only a ride to the Cotopaxi national Park, maybe this explains the $66 price tag that we thought a bit steep just to get us over there and back. ... The Cotopaxi is still nowhere to be seen, but Marco promises us that the clouds will brake later in the morning and all will be revealed. ... I confess that I was a bit miffed when Olive wrote to me that she had seen Floor and Bas again, the guys we met in the Amazon, on the plane back to Amsterdam, this is what she wrote: "They climbed to the very top of Cotopaxi! That is to say that Floor did, Bas had to give up before the top. ...

Photos from the recent mountaineering skills trip to Volcan Cotopaxi - Ecuador I met an American girl the afternoon we arrived at the Refugio, she told me how she had been planing this climb for the past year, training for six months, waiting six days for the weather to clear and tonight was her night. ... She told me how something very bad had happened in her life last year and from that, or because of that, she set herself two goals; Getting in to a PHD program, and Cotopaxi was the other. ...
