Mar 25, 2018 - One More Day in Banos

Today is Palm Sunday in Banos. Arrangements of palm fronds are sold after mass and there was a solemn procession at noon. Banos is usually busy on weekends but it is especially festive today. Jerry went to the baths at 5 AM and returned to La Chimenea in time for breakfast. Actually we ate 3 breakfasts because on this travel day I knew there wouldn't be much else to eat the rest of the day. . First we had the Volcano Pancakes on the roof of the Chimenea. Then we joined the Sunday gringo crowd that meets at Hotel Dusseldorf. Some call them...

Mar 18, 2018 - Banos, Ambato

My friend Jill Sare lives in Banos, Tungurahua, near Quito. Since she was returning home to Banos, she offered to let me ride along with her for the 5-hour trip. I met up with Jerry Dunn there and will do some sightseeing for the next couple of days before we tour the Amazon. I booked a waterfalls tour aboard an open-air truck called a chiva. I'd taken the tour once before but it's never the same twice. I met two guys who sat next to me, Gutenberg and Brian, and they were enthused to try the zipline. I was content with riding in a...

Dec 14, 2014 - Baños - A Bit of a Bust

We arrived in Baños tired and with a lot of dirty laundry as we had left Latacunga the morning following our trek. We had called ahead to the very pretty Posada del Arte so they were waiting for us when we arrived. We had come to Baños to hang out in the hot springs that it is named for, chill out and enjoy the vibe. There was really no vibe evident when we arrived and strolled around town. There were a lot of street vendors selling the local candy specialty and some kind of festival going on that we later found out was to celebrate the...

Jun 6, 2014 - Days 290 to 294 - Banos (Ecuador)

After the marathon 34 hour journey from Trujillo (Peru), I finally arrived in Baños (Ecuador) at 6.00am on Monday 2nd June and was only too glad to see a couple of hostel touts at the bus station, especially as it was raining hard (something that I’m not used to!). I happily agreed to the $8.00 room rate and hit the pit for an hour or so; well, that was the plan but I ended up sleeping for five hours! Rising at lunchtime and with no rain, I had a good look around the town, which is not particularly large but definitely set up for tourism...

Thursday 29th May 2014 Ecuadorian Jungle to Banos, Ecuador After breakfast in the lodge, we farewelled the staff and took Frederico and his wife and one older boy and a little girl part of the way towards the town. they were apparently visiting the hospital, so we dropped them off on the way. Today is fine with high cloud and warm. We continued through mountainous country with large wild rivers in deep valleys. There were sometimes crops growing on steep sided hills with houses sometimes in apparently very inaccessible places. At around...

Jul 4, 2013 - How I Spent My Fourth of July

July 4, 1970 was my wedding day. That was 43 years ago. This year, in order to celebrate the Fourth of July, I signed on for a 10 AM tour of the waterfalls on the road to Puyo. Some rented mountain bikes and rode the scenic side road but I took the open-air chiva, basically a truck with bench seats. We saw at least a dozen waterfalls, among them Manta de la Novia, the Brides Veil. The highlight was the final walk to the one called the Pailon del Diablo or Devil's Cauldron. Cost was $3 because I walked around and shopped for the best price....

Jul 2, 2013 - Banos, Ambato

On to Banos, Ambato, the town famous for the currently erupting Volcano Tungurahua and the hot springs. The bus ride from Quito took a few hours but the scenery along the way kept me entertained. When I arrived, I walked to Cafe Hood for lunch and on to my favorite lodging in Banos, Hostel La Chimenea. www.hostelchimenea.com $19 per person

Sobota, 23 luty - Cuenca, Banos Ceunca nie ma bezposredniego polaczenia autobusowego z Banos. Wiec, aby tam dotrzec bierzemy autobus do Ambato. Autobus odjezdza o godzinie 8 rano (bilet $7/osobe) aby po 7 godzinach dotrzec do Ambato. Jedziemy tz. 'Ruta del Volcanos'. Jednak tych wulkanow nie jestesmy w stanie zobaczyc. Znaczna czesc drogi jest we mgle. Ale jedziemy dosc wysoko. Mozna to zauwazyc po roslinosci. Od czasu do czasu udaje sie zauwazyc 'podstawy' wulkanow (nawet az do widocznego sniegu) ale ich stozki sa zupelnie niewidoczne we...

Feb 19, 2013 - Mountains, rain and a SPA

At 9 am some of us met up with Giovanny and, despite the rain, we decided to hike the mountain. It's only about 2,000 metres above sea level but I sure felt the altitude. Bellevista was our first stop on a muddy, steep path and it sits at 3,300 metres. Next we hiked along a road (uphill) to a hotel where the views are magnificent, again, despite the rain and clouds. More muddy paths down hill now and some up hill and we came upon a cow tethered to a tree. Further along, the path splits and we took the uphill path to visit the virgin Mary....

May 31, 2012 - Come al luna park
