Feb 6, 2020 - Sea and Sick
Well, we had a different sea day today. We went for breakfast and had a look at a poolside sale then returned to our room. It was very windy and sitting on the veranda was not an option. Christine started to feel a bit queasy with the motion and took some Gravol which helped but did not completely dispose of the unsettled feeling. We sat and read. Christine had very little for lunch. I picked up what we normally would have from the Neptune lounge and ate in the room. I went to the strings lunchtime performance. I felt the ship had settled...

Feb 5, 2020 - Amber Cove, Dominican Republic
When we stepped out onto the deck tonight and the breeze warmly wrapped our pants round our legs we reflected that the feeling would have been quite different if we had done this at home where the same pants would probably have turned stiff and our legs felt the chill of the cold fabric. We are fortunate to be able to escape at least some of the ravages of winter. We were up early this morning and had our breakfast delivered to our room. We ate and got ready then waited for the all clear to leave the ship. We watched the ship dock at Amber...

Oct 22, 2018 - Dom Rep Oct 2018
Left Bristol early on Oct 11. Good flight and some 15 hours later arrived at the hotel, tired. For those who did not know we were going on this trip Jen & I are being accompanied by Richard & Gemma. Local time on arrival was 5.30 pm, five hours behind UK. We unpacked ASAP and found the lobby bar to freshen up before eating, dispensing as many Hola’s as possible along the way. This resort fully deserves its Luxury title, the buildings, rooms, restaurants and gardens are really fantastic, as are most of the staff. We retired to bed as late...

Apr 2, 2018 - Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic starts our Repo cruise off right!
Twenty years ago we boarded a Carnival cruise ship with two-year-old Christopher. I was so busy that I didn’t have time to do the usual vacation planning so we thought a Caribbean cruise would work out well. It sure did! We didn’t consider the advantages of the free child care, which would whisk Christopher away to Camp Carnival so that we could enjoy a leisurely meal, a few hours at the blackjack tables, or even an overnight on the balcony. Considering how much fun we had, it’s somewhat surprising that it’s taken us this long to board...

Amber Cove 8 am to 3:30 PM. We did the Discover Puerto Plata Traditions and Local Flavors. We took a nice air conditioned tour bus and visited the Vivonte Cigar Factory and they shared information and we watched them roll cigars. We tasted organic coffee and were offered a cigarillo to smoke. Only 1-2 people did partake of that offer. We stopped in the city and toured Cathedral San Felipe and Plaza Independencia, and then walked around downtown. We also went to n organic chocolate factory and learned how they make chocolate. We had a few...

Jan 25, 2015 - Dominican Republic
We had to make a visa trip to the Dominican Repbublic as they have a US Embassy and Vaughan needed a B2 visa to enter US territory on a private yacht. We applied online and then flew over to do the interview. It was all a bit of a nightmare as an appointment for an interview had to be made on line but that could not be done before the fee was paid but that had to be paid at a bank in the Dominican Republic. Even though it was touch and go, he did get the visa. Christopher Columbus made his first landfall in 1492 in the Dominican Republic...

I wanted to make one last entry to thank everyone who has been reading about and following my trip to the Dominican Republic this summer! I am now home safely in Columbus after a long day of travel yesterday. I spent the past week with my mom, aunt, and uncle traveling around the rest of the country and revisiting a lot of places that we had gone on our ELAP excursions - Las Terrenas, Cabarete, Puerto Plata, Santiago, and Jarabacoa. Even though it was a little bit harder than I expected at the beginning of the week to leave Santo Domingo,...

The past few days have been very emotional in many different ways. Since this was our last week of work and our last official week of the ELAP program, it has been full of sadness and goodbyes, but also excitement for what awaits us when we get home. I have been sick this week, so I unfortunately missed a couple of my last work days. Thankfully, however, I was well enough to go in on Thursday for our final day at the community center. They threw us a going-away party with music, dancing, cards, and touching speeches by the children. By the...

A lot has happened since the last time I wrote - I know that was a while ago! I've been so busy here lately, and it is unbelievable to me that we will be finished working one week from yesterday. I'm definitely starting to realize my attachment to this country and to all of the people in it, and I am not looking forward to having to say goodbye. This past weekend, we went on our very last excursion to San Cristobal. We explored a couple more caves and did a little bit of hiking, which somehow made me extremely sore the next day! It was a...

This is the end of week 5 in the Dominican Republic - the time is flying by so fast! Some days I am ready to come home, but others I never want to leave. This week has been pretty much the same as far as work goes, but I did end up getting sick on Tuesday night and had to stay home on Wednesday. It was the weirdest illness I've ever had - I came down with a fever right when I was going to bed (I knew I had a fever because the power was out so we didn't have a fan, but I was shivering under a sheet!) and I also had body aches and an upset...

The last few days have been pretty busy here in Santo Domingo! On Thursday we had a normal day at the community center full of dancing and playing, but we also got to teach the kids the English alphabet for the first time! We will be planning more English lessons in the future that will mainly focus on the alphabet, numbers, short phrases, etc. After work we went to a meeting with one of our program coordinators and the other ELAP students to discuss how our time has been at each of our individual placements. We compared the American and...

Jul 2, 2014 - Random Thoughts!
I realized that there are a lot of little things that are very important to my experience here but that I do not always think to write about in these entries. Here's a list of some of the random things that I see/experience/think about every day! 1. We live with two almost 70-year-old sisters, and one of them used to be a professional singer 2. The food is amazing here! Rice, beans, and plantains usually appear on our plates at least once a day 3. We live in a very nice part of the city with lots of policemen and medical centers 4....
