Jun 12, 2018 - Valec to Telc - and a day off!

Stage 4 - 71 Kms Is it any different driving here in the Czech Republic than at home? Possibly - let me just count the ways! I’m looking for road signs that say things like Misliborice, Jaromerice, Moravske Budejovice, etc. (because I always have to double check that the GPS has got me going where I need to go – I can’t blindly accept the spoken instructions, much as I’d like to). Then there are the roadworks that I come upon suddenly with no warning and the huge trucks hurtling along these narrow two-lane roads that cause me to wince when...

Sep 10, 2014 - Vienna to Telc

An early departure from Vienna complete with breakfast in a bag. Have so many impressions of this elegant city: magnificent buildings, museums, crowds, rich cakes, and layers of history; we've seen so much yet there is so much more to see as we realised when John raced us through an area few had seen before we gathered at the Skybar for a glass of wine as we watched the lights come on. Quickly into the countryside we passed the same type of neat farms seen previously but once across the border from Austria into the Czech Republic there was...

Jul 17, 2014 - Czech Republic

When we drove across the border into the Czech Republic it seemed like things changed immediately. The Czech Republic is not as affluent as the other countries we have visited and it is apparent. It has only been 25 years since the breakup of the Soviet Union when CZ became an independent country. CZ is part of European Union but kept their own money system. Their money is big numbers -- 5000 krunas is about $250. CZ is a lot less expensive than the rest of Europe and we are enjoying the more reasonable prices. We spent the first two nights...

Aug 31, 2012 - Czech Republic - Telc

29th August 2012 (Bed 73) Oh, there was one other thing I wanted to share with you: I wish I was given 1 cent for every time someone looked at our car in a strange manner. Actually, they were looking at our number plate. It was quite funny at times. First came the strange look, then the amazed look and sometimes, the look of disbelief at what they were seeing. Some even waited until we walked away from the car and came up for a closer look. In the whole time we have been travelling in the left hand drive countries, we have only seen one...

Jun 4, 2009 - The rain fell

Sunday 31st May. Last night the temperature dropped like a stone and the rain started with flashes of lightning and thunder. We were both cold in bed and drawing the curtains in the morning saw the grey sky and falling rain. On leaving our temp gauge showed 8 degrees! Surely the celebrations would be cancelled. We drove to the village but were stopped a mile away to be parked up with the hundreds of cars already there as well as 22 coaches. We were chicken and ran. It was gum boot weather for walking the fields and we did not fancy standing...

Jul 3, 2005 - Oasis

We found yet another oasis in our travels. Not the desert kind, but a place that just oozes with charm. From Prague, we were a little lost without a guidebook but wanting to visit a small town in the CR. So, we poked around a little in the tourist office and the bookstore to find one that might be nice and not to touristy. We found Telc (Telch). It is just a couple hours south of Praha and was exactly what we were looking for. The main square is full of old houses, a church, fountains and the like around its cobblestone streets. While we...

Oct 22, 2004 - Moravia Trip - Telc

This weekend we took a trip around different parts of Moravia (Eastern Czech Republic). It was a really fun trip because it was a lot of people from the international student club so we got to know everyone a lot better by the end of the trip. The first place we went to on Friday was to the town of Telc(Telch). It was a very cool little touristy town with a neat chateau that had a gorgeous view of the city. Check out the pics...
