Sep 27, 2019 - Next stop Prague!

As we must check out of our Cesky Krumlov apartment by 10:00, we rise earlier than most mornings in order to pack and catch our ride to Prague at 1:00 pm. So having packed and showered with time to spare, I call Delta airlines to change my ticket to October 3 to match Judi Bailey’s! Somehow I had inadvertently booked my airline ticket for October 2 instead of October 3! Having successfully changed my ticket and paid the difference in airfare, we leave our luggage at reception and go in search of breakfast! An Australian couple we had met a...

Sep 26, 2019 - Exploring Cesky Krumlov

After an active day yesterday we are looking forward to a slower and easier pace today. We started out at what we thought was a photography museum next door to our apartment. It wasn't but there was a nice display of art including Picasso, Dali, Warhol, and Lichtenstein and we discovered a Czech artist Mucha that we liked. Now we are looking for a bakery since we had no toast with breakfast. Surprisingly after all the bakeries we saw in Budapest and Vienna, we couldn't find one here. There were a couple sweet shops, but no bakery. We did...

Sep 26, 2019 - Cesky Krumlov

Just a short one tonight. I took the bus, a 3 hour one way trip, to Cesky Krumlov. It was worth the trip! It felt like walking into a fairytale. It is so well preserved. Only 6.5 km walked today. That was done wandering around the beautiful town. The pictures just don’t capture the beauty. I’m so glad I went.

Sep 25, 2019 - Walking Tour and Castle

We have a leisurely morning as there is a rain prediction. So finally getting out the door, I follow Judi on the Rick Steve’s walking tour of the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque town. We start at Horni Bridge (upper Bridge) for our 17 minute walking tour, with any stops! One our first stops was one of the most scenic views of the town and castle. There are many tourists so it becomes quite challenging to get photos without either a horde of tourists or of someone taking multiple shots in different poses. We stuck our heads into several...

Sep 24, 2019 - Cesky Krumlov

Time to move on again. We are heading to Cesky Krumlov, a picturesque old town with a castle on a river in the Czech Republic. Taking a train from Vienna was not the best option, so we are taking a CK Shuttle. It is an 8-person van and we lucked out as being the only 2 passengers today and having Tomas as our driver. Judi C thinks he should be a model. The last half of the drive was on 2-lane roads thru the countryside and was lovely. We did have one rest stop at a new McDonald's in a relatively small town. Quite a surprise. I was also...

Sep 23, 2019 - Vienna Wrap-Up

September 23 - Vienna Wrap-up This is our last day in Vienna, so there are a few things we want to accomplish. We have not been inside St. Stephens Cathedral, except for a quick look and to be asked to leave as it was only open for prayers at that time. Using Rick Steves guide again we venture inside and discover to “get inside the ropes” we need to pay for the audio guide, it is now 11:30 and they won’t let us in as there is a 12:00 o’clock mass scheduled. So “come back about 1:15”. We continue Rick’s tour of the outside of the church. The...

Jan 5, 2019 - Returning to My Fairytale Village

Up at 6am this morning, all showered and packed up and ready to leave the apartment by 7am. Had an Uber pick us up and deliver us to the bus station and were surprised when we found she had actually dropped us right at the spot we needed to be in. Only a few minutes late, our Leo Express bus turned up, loaded up and we were on our way for the 2 hour drive down to Cesky Krumlov, one of my favourite destinations in Europe. It was 2C as we left Prague but very quickly dropped down to -1C as we headed south and the snow started to fall thick...

Sep 25, 2018 - Cesky Krumlov

Took a tour to Cesky Krumlov today. It is a little village about 2 1/2 hours outside of Prague. It is very charming, surrounded by the Vtlava River with a castle and clock tower which we climbed. We had "typical" lunch that was provided - chicken for Mike with dumplings (more like sliced bread), potato pancakes and cabbage soup. For Denise it was salad, a sort of frittata, mixed green veggies with garlic, potato pancake and hummus - not too bad. Had a beer from the local brewery in town - Eggenberg - and it was very good. Visited the...

Sep 15, 2018 - Cesky Krumlov

Our last stopover in Czechia was in Cesky Krumlov another mountain town not too far from the Austrian border. An early start, at least for us, allowed us to call in to a number of towns along the way from Kutna Hora. Those included Telc, Jindrichuv Hradec, Trebon and Cesky Budejovice. All were very colourful especially around their centre squares but Jindrichuv Hradec stood out for its lakeside setting. The onward 5 hour drive once again passed through undulating farmland on roads seemingly planned for bike riding. The only obstacle was...

Jun 17, 2018 - Linz to Cesky Krumlov - Back in Czech Republic

Stage 8 - 92 Kms Bruce decided to give himself a bit more of a break today and travelled in the van with me again. But he wasn't the only one. The projected climbing for the riders today was sufficient to convince three of the riders not to do the first half of the ride and to come with me in the van. Pretty smart of them, I thought. As we headed out of town there was immediately an 18 - 19% grade and those of us in the van emitted a collective "urgh!" when we saw it. (Brickyard, eat your heart out! For off-Islanders 'Brickyard' is the kind...

Dec 4, 2017 - A trip through Three Countries

We were up really early this morning and down for breakfast before the restaurant opened. Christine was afraid we would miss the bus that was leaving to take us to Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic. This is an old mediaeval town with an old castle and narrow streets and old buildings decorated with sgarffitto and frescos. It was a dull day threatening to snow, and in fact it did snow off and on all day. The ship had docked at Brandstatt to land those who were going on our tour and another one to Salzburg. We had been told to take our...
