Feb 1, 2010 - WestJet Vancouver-Toronto-Varadero

February 1 - Vancouver to Toronto After our usual flurry of activity before any long trip--last minute packing, cleaning the house, trying to remember everything--we finally got away on the 5 ferry (thanks Josie for the ride)!. Pacific Coach Lines to the airport and then martinis at the Vancouver Fairmont since we have a long wait for our flight departing at 11pm. WestJet check-in staff very accommodating. The best news, however, is that our plane has only 47 passengers. We are each able to have a row to stretch out ... Joanne slept most...

May 18, 2009 - Varadero, Cuba

Another day, another bus station, and another road trip. I must admit to getting fairly used to these. I am safely tucked away in my backpack so I am toasty warm. Elaine is getting wise and now wears long pants and her fleece on the bus. Once we arrived in Varadero we headed to Cubatour to find out about hotels. The girl was very friendly and booked us into The Hotel International. We grabbed a taxi, and by 11:45 that morning we were checked into our ocean view room. From our balcony we could really see the ocean. Once again it was the...

May 7, 2009 - Catamaran trip

Little did I know what I was in for! Friday morning, we were up and ready to head off on our Catamaran trip. Now one thing I have to tell you, Cory and Elaine were a bit upset about having spent two weeks learning Spanish, and felt perhaps they should have studied Italian, or German, or any other language, even French. For the entire 5 days on Cayo Largo, they did not run into another person who spoke English as a first language. Some of the staff at the resort were able to make limited conversation in English, Italian, French, and German....

Feb 28, 2008 - Audi's First Vacation South - Varadero, Cuba

Audi's first trip South! Ken warned me that I would want to travel south every year once I experience it. Boy was he ever right! Highlights: 1st Catamaran Tour that took us to the island of Cayo Blanco. We also named the resort pool bar 'Canada Corner' and met lots of great folks. One couple being a sister/brother combo. We found it a little odd they traveled together at that young age and shared a room. I did get food poisoning on that trip. I'm still sure it was the slimy asparagus I had at one of the a la carte restaurants on the resort...

Living the Dream

Jan 17, 2008 - Day 18 - Bayamo to Varadero to Matanzas

Trip: 75.53km Time: 3.58hrs Avg Speed: 19 kph Max Speed: 34 kph Considering we are on a moving bus we slept fairly well and woke up around 6am and then dozed until Santa Clara at 7:30am. We had a ham & cheese bocaditios and coffee for breakfast and back on to the bus. We arrived into Varadero at 11:00am and were biking away by 11:30am. Fero wanted to see Varadero so we cycled to the end of the cay, and back - close to 40km. One good thing is that biking towards the west is much easier as the wind is at our backs. We stopped for lunch at a...

Aug 10, 2007 - Varadero

Friday 10th August First stop on our first day in Cuba was clearly going to be to an ATM...and it was all we should have expected...long queues. We were lucky in the sense that the machine was actually working but within ten minutes of opening the bank had developed an 8 person queue and each transaction seemed to take 5 minutes...it seemed that people just like playing with buttons because by the time we got there Zoe and I were both finished in a minute having paid our 20% US dollar conversion fee, despite the fact I was withdrawing the...

Dec 5, 2005 - Varadero
