Up at the ungodly hour of 6:30 am this morning as I was going to get picked up at 7:30 am for my tour to Vinales - well at 8:15 I was still sitting in the lobby waiting for the bus. One of the things I have realised again on this trip is that I am not the "tour" type of person - but when you do not have a lot of time it is still the best way to experience and learn about an area. Apr 9, 2006 - Cuba - Occidente

The Occidente (west) Our trip to western Cuba was good fun. We spent a few days in and around the beach Maria La Gorda and then another few days in and around the small town of Viñales. Playa Maria La Gorda is a beach and dive centre. It, like most of the southern coast of Cuba, was badly hit by the cyclones last year (but, as it is not the US, it did not make the news, of course), and there was a lot of damage obvious - destroyed roads, removed foliage, dead trees. It was still however idyllic - think palm trees on beach and red sunset....

Jan 2, 2005 - Pinar del Rio

Pinar was a bit of dump. The hustlers were particularly irritating and the few restaurants even worse than usual. Our otherwise nice hosts in the Casa tried to rip us off over the laundry. The only reason we stayed here so long was I that wasted a whole day on a wild goose chase for a hire car -to hell with the cost- after the frustration of not being able to go anywhere we wanted to when we were in Santiago. Although there were only three or four places that offered hire cars, if took hours traipsing from one to the other, waiting either...
