Mar 3, 2019 - Sunday March 3, 2019 - Holguin

Our last full day in Cuba. 𯘢 By 9am we are ready to head out and walk over to see 'The Passion' restaurant as we will likely have lunch there. We walked the 1km into the centre occasionally darting into air conditioned stores to cool off. All offices are open 7 days a week and I have been told there is no 'designated' day off. To us, there is no difference between week day and weekend, except maybe the hours of the bank. We find a nice shady spot at the main square Parque Calixta Garcia, named after a Major General in the early 1900's,...

Mar 2, 2019 - Saturday March 2, 2019 - Guardalavaca- Holguin

Our darling roosters had us awake early and even doddering we were ready by 9am and the taxi comes at 11. Luisa & Lily both dropped by to say farewell and I popped up to see Orlando. Frank, our taxi driver, speaks excellent English so we heard again about the good and the bad about living in Cuba. Somehow most of it doesn't add up and we think there is a huge black market economy here. Some prices are very high and yet the Cubans are able to pay (not all Cubans mind you), so there has to be more underground businesses! By 11am wet are in...

Feb 20, 2019 - Wednesday February 20, 2019 - Baconao - Gibara

Awake at 5:30am and dozed until 6:45. Happy to be leaving here and onwards to Gibara. The first time we have ever felt so happy to leave and vow never to return! Breakfast and checkout completed we left at exactly 8:25am. The morning is nice and fresh and we make good time through the edge of Santiago de Cuba and on to the Carretera Nacional - the lovely 4 lane highway. Before long the road narrows to the two lane but we do very well. The countryside is varied and beautiful with many small villages and towns. We arrive on the outskirts of...

Feb 24, 2016 - Gibara and Holguin

Breakfast at the hotel was a buffet, with fruit, sliced ham and cheese, boiled eggs, mashed sweet potatoes, and bacon. There was juice, water, and coffee to drink. One of the group, Lee, had a birthday, and we all signed a card for her – which was the first and least of her surprises for the day. After breakfast, we went to a cigar factory in Gibara. We were not allowed to take photos or carry bags. There was a security guard. Actually there were quite a few security guards; it was not clear why. Our hostess was the "reader," which meant...

Cuba 2016

Feb 23, 2016 - Arriving in Cuba

Our wake up call was at 5:45 and we were down in the lobby by 6:30 am. We got a bag breakfast--apple, banana, OJ and a couple of granola bars. We boarded the bus at 6:45. Hurry up and wait. ☹ Eventually we all got checked in and through security. Larry got shuttled into a quicker line (TSA Pre?), and I went with him. After we had our shoes off, we were told we didn't have to. We bought a bottle of water and finished most of our breakfast, and soon it was time to board. The flight was pretty uneventful, fortunately. We landed In Holguin, on...

Cuba 2016

Oct 10, 2012 - Holguin City, Cuba, Caribbean

Well Holguin City, as beautiful as it is, is just as rural looking as the outskirts suburban ares. It's certainly not everybody's cup of tea, if one prefers to see the modern day Cuba, with the bustling nightlife, then I suggest a visit to Havana. I was intrigued by the way the Province had been reserved. There was a vast array of dated Americanised cars that complimented the setting and horse drawn carriages at your beckon call. I was in ore with the City and its surroundings and relished the opportunity to snap away. I didn't want to miss...

Oct 9, 2012 - Gaurdalavaca, Cuba, Caribbean

I took a bus ride from the resort destination Guardalavaca. Here you will find a market and on the other side of the market a beach. You can choose to spend either an hour or about three hours before the bus comes back around to collect you. On entering the market I found the local Cubans greet you and welcome you, they invite you to look around

Nov 10, 2005 - Holguin - City of Parques.

Holguin is Cuba's city of Parks. Enough said. (DB - but there's no parks! only concrete squares!) We explored the plazas, talked about Skippy and Flipper with our hosts (those shows are really popular here), and sank a few beers with our new mate Franklin. He told us all about his Swiss girlfriend we was getting ready to meet.
