Feb 24, 2017 - fly to Cuba

The guide used good guide psychology warning us not to expect five star standards when it comes to our hotels and restaurants. He said there might be no hot water, poor lighting, menus limited, etc., etc. But so far the only disappointment we have had was the late departure of our American Airlines flight. We checked in at a special area devoted to flights to Cuba. Many more than I expected. It was late afternoon before we were wheels down in Cuba. The flight was full of the 22 of us and Cuban nationals bringing home all manner of consumer...

Apr 25, 2014 - Camaguey: City of Churches

Sadly but fortunately, I am running out of places on my list of places to see in Cuba. I am fortunate because I feel like I have accomplished and seen a lot the island has to offer that most people who visit for a shorter time cant. I have also been able to appreciate Cuba on a whole other level that life in Havana alone couldn’t offer. Sadly, because this means that I am running out of money and time (more for the money than the time) which means I might not be able to re-visit the Bay of Pigs for more dives. This weekend’s plans barely...

Feb 7, 2014 - To Camaguey via the rebels' hideout near Santo Domingo

Friday 7 Feb Santo Domingo This is a small hamlet in a lush area of the Sierra Maestra with a river running through it. The villagers all have some small-holding with pigs, hens, vegetables etc and many also work at the only hotel where we stayed. After breakfast – fairly basic after the huge variety in the 5-star Melia, we got into ‘jeeps – really posh huge cars which carried twelve people not the open-sided green jeeps I had expected – up to the parkiging area where our walk started. The guide provided us with sticks which were quite...

Cuba and Colombia

Jun 25, 2009 - Sculptures in real life

Up early and pack. Leave lots of stuff for the host family. Bill for three days (breakfast and dinner each plus drinks, water, and laundry) at 112 CU. Hugs and photos as we pack up the bus. Lovely people – would like to stay there again! But off to Camaguey – stop in a Rapido in a small town – not the best food. Pizza and orange Fanta. To Camaguey about 3:00 and bicycle taxi through the town with Abel serving as tour guide – lots of sights to see. One was a statue garden of local people. One was of a man reading a newspaper with the actual...

Cuba and rum

Jan 27, 2009 - Hola mi amigos.

It is apparent here in Canada that despite clear blue skies and a blazing sun, that the temperature of minus 27 has a lot to do with what Canadians (and us as closet Canucks) think of the winter. A trip to the airport at anytime of the day or night this weather, will see scores of them lined up checking in, or returning from, a number of sunny destinations around Mexco, Cuba or the Carribbean. Also looking on-line will show literally thousands of package holiday deals to these same locations offered by about a dozen different airlines. So...

Kings Travels

Jul 1, 2007 - Camaguey

Camaguey is the home town of our guide therefore he has been building it up to be one of the highlights of our tour. Unfortunately we only had one night here. The streets of Camaguey were designed to be similar to that of a maze. This was done in order to confuse the pirates when they came to raid the town. I'm glad we had our guide with us as I had heard of tourists who walked round and round for ages not being able to find their way back to their casa or hotel. Camaguey is the agricultural area of Cuba. This town is known for its cattle...

Apr 23, 2006 - Camaguey

Vamos a Cuba!

Nov 6, 2005 - Camaguey - good times and bad times

Another town where we lost our way but at least this time it was daylight! By chance we came across our casa particular and we were warmly greeted by the senora and a cool glass of the ubiquitous fresh guava juice. What a change! We went for a wander around town on this sleepy Sunday afternoon and saw that the Cuban people were out and about - old men playing dominoes, kids practicing baseball with their dads, soccer practice and stick ball. Add to that some street party salsa and the place had a typical Cuban feel to it. We were enchanted...
