May 10, 2013 - Northern Croatia
Week 3 We have now left Slovenia – all good things come to an end – and have left with fond memories. I know there is a fear that we have done the best first, misplaced I suspect. Slovenia was special but I am sure the same will be true of many of the other of our destinations over the coming months. We left Bled on Monday 5th and decided to go against our normal policy and take the autoroute down to Croatia. Trundled along for an hour or so when a voice beside me says ‘did you know we had to have a vinjeta for the auto route?’ Clearly no...

Oct 20, 2012 - Rovinj - White Truffles
Our hotel is in the perfect spot...and we get our exercise walking up and down the two flights of stairs! We decided to go north for the day..so after our 30 minute construction reroute, we reached our first destination of Motovun, a hill town. The area is known for their white truffles..so we sampled white truffle and cheese spread, white truffle oil, honey brandy with white truffle, etc. all delicious! As we wandered around the village, we saw some of the dogs they use to hunt the white truffles (only white truffles). Our guide in...

Oct 19, 2012 - Rovinj
After waking up to seagulls and fisherman readying their boats for the day, we headed out to tour the Istrian Peninsula. Our hotel is on Tito Square over looking the marina and harbor--a very picturesque location. Lots of outdoor restaurants and we went to sleep the night before to the sounds of an excellent alto sax player. Our first stop was Pula, south of Rovinj at the tip, to see the Roman amphitheater, the 6th largest and one of the best preserved. We then climbed up to Fort Kastel for a bird's eye view of the city. Pula is a port city...

Rovinj Today we biked 14 miles for a total of 325 miles Another beautiful warm Adriatic coast morning with a slight breeze to keep it civilized. Our sobe is good but not great. We decided to bike around the coast south of Rovinj. We swam a couple of times in the clear turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. People on vacation spend a lot of time at the beaches, for obvious reasons. Some use sunblock and others do not. Later in the day this was evident by the volume of red scorched bodies we saw. Because school has started, the was a lot of...

Sep 10, 2012 - Back to the Mediterrean coast, Rovinj
Back to the Adriatic sea, Rovinj Biked 32 miles for a total of 311 miles Had a fine breakfast from our sobe host. Ate it on our terrace. Ingredients for a great breakfast. Started climbing right away for a bit. Went through vineyards, olive tree orchards and small vegetable farms. Eventually, the climbs ended and we slowly, descended to the sea. We stayed on secondary roads for most of the journey, which is a good idea in this part of the world. Saw several fellow bikers, most out for the day. Pulled into Rovinj, which is along the coast of...

Sep 14, 2011 - Still sailing - new crew
13th September Had a busy past few days. Having said a tearful bye bye to Neill Dave and I had the boat to ourselves which is a first. We managed fine in very light winds and it was very relaxing sitting in Trieste bay. Trieste is a city of contrasts with a major port, industry and some decidedly dodgy areas but there are some really lovely bits too with an amazing Roman amphitheatre and other remains plus gracious squares and interesting back streets. On Saturday I went shopping for Dave’s birthday and I must say although I love being...

Sep 5, 2011 - Still Sailing
6th September Dave has bought a dongle for the internet as we have had trouble in Croatia, trouble is we're now heading back into Sovenia so I'm desperately typing this before we go over some mystical line and I'm cut off! Have spent the last 10 days or so going through the wonderful islands each with it's own character and tiny community - if inhabited at all. It has been lovley to watch the daily rhythm of the islands when the most exciting thing to happen is a ferry arriving. Tere are no cars so people go around on iether little tractor...

Jun 12, 2011 - Rovinj, Croatia
We woke up Sunday morning in Croatia in the city of Rovinj – a couple of hundred years ago it was an island until it was joined to the mainland by an ambitious engineering project. Hilary led us in our morning yoga on the top deck of the yacht as we sailed into the harbour and put an anchor down near the shore. A few us did our two-mile walk around the deck and then a trip to the gym for some weights. Are you impressed? Me too! I really hope I can keep up an exercise program this summer to balance the eating and drinking. After breakfast...

Jun 12, 2011 - Rovinj, Croatia
June 12, 2011 Brenda was up at 6:30 for the 7:00 a.m. yoga group with Hillary. I showered and arrived early for breakfast on the Veranda which allowed me to enjoy the company of several breakfast companions as they rotated through the 2 hours I sat enjoying the breeze and sipping coffee. Our port of call was Rovinj, Croatia (pronounced rove-inyee) and Brenda, Penny and I took the tender into the ancient town. The narrow alley ways of polished paving stones indicated the many centuries of foot traffic that had walked through the hilly town....

Jun 8, 2010 - Rovinj Croatia
Well we travled by car from Zagreb to Rovinj (situated on the north Adriatic Sea). What an amazing little town. It has to be one of the most beautiful places that we have ever seen. Lots of small shop, cobble stone streets built around a great harbor. The town is over looked by the St. Euphemia church.

****A huge thank you to everyone for reading our entries, sharing in the trip, and learning about this beautiful country with us. We are really enjoying your notes to us, so keep them coming :-) We did have questions about the scary doll head from a couple entries back...that was laying in the contruction trash of a what will be a very cool multi level home being built into the historic wall, including a gate into town, in Opratalj in Istria. One of our many dream houses on this trip. Nope, we havent gone cult... Keep the questions coming...
