Jul 17, 2012 - Plitvice Lakes- rode 15 ks

Tuesday 17/7/12 Plitvice Lakes- rode 15 ks We forced ourselves to eat as much as possible for the breakfast included with the bungalow…. Nickie was in raptures over toast with butter and Honey, and fruit salad!!! We had the option to ride on the free bus from camp to the park at 9am which returned at 5pm. Instead we cycled up the hill 7ks, no sweat with no bags!! The line for tickets was long already at 8.45….and the first 30mins we walked in a mob with coachloads and families and tour groups….amazing that people were allowed to take their...

Jul 16, 2012 - to Korana Camp, 8ks from Plitvice lakes.

Monday 16/7/12 Korana Camp, 8ks from Plitvice lakes. 15ks Had a great nights sleep in the meadow, Nickie slept in her merino long sleeve top, long pants and down vest in sleeping bag…it was only 16C…brrrr.. No rain, overcast sky. Had coffee with Ben and Ari as they had their breakfast..they are off to Split and the southern islands. The narrow road wiggled down the valley, and we stopped at view points of the lakes. We passed by many homesteads offering accommodation, the Lakes are a huge tourist attraction. The clouds threatened rain,...

Jul 15, 2012 - Plitvice Lakes National Park

PLITVICE LAKE National Park is PARADISE. Rating 10+ out of 10!! We think this must be where Adam & Eve lived! There are 16 lakes and many, many waterfalls, wooden walkways, trails and viewpoints. We walked/hiked a leisurely 18 kms just taking in the incredible natural beauty. It was a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful day! The colour of the water is anywhere from emerald green to dark blue. Needless to say we took lots of pictures. The park was declared a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1979 and is also the oldest National Park in Croatia. It is so...

Jul 15, 2012 - to freecamp at Selo Village, Plitvice Lakes NP 65ks

Sunday 15/7/12 to freecamp at Selo Village, Plitvice Lakes National Park 65ks We woke a few times in the night to light rain… did we last have rain in week 1 ?? More rain at 7.30am so we stayed in the tent another half hour til it stopped. Surprisingly the ground around us was pretty dry and the wet clothes we draped over the ferns last night were almost dry. As we were finishing our muesli/yoghurt/banana breakfast we heard hooves clipping along on the road and the tonk tonk of bells, dogs barking and the shepherd yelling…wonder if they...

Jul 11, 2012 - Croatia 2 - Plitvice Lakes

This is an entry where I have no idea where one ends and the other begins. Ohhh boy. So we woke up early at 8 and caught the van tour to Plitvice with our insane driver Boris. We got to Plitvice Lakes with the group and stayed for 4 hours and it was well worth it. The lakes are one of the reasons we came to Croatia and t didn't disappoint. The weather was 100% perfect and it proved why the lakes are considered the best natural wonder in Europe after the alps and fjords. The water was a different color at any angle, there were caves you...

May 31, 2011 - A Beautiful Morning in Plitvice NP

I woke with the sparrows to get into the park as soon as possible. Of course while the park opens at 7am, none of the boats which are essential to get to the trails start til 8am or a bit later. technically you can hike around the big lake, but that would have taken hours and I only have til midday which is checkout time at the hotel and also the bus to Zagreb is shortly after that. However the morning light favors photography so much more than the harsh daylight that was a big problem for me yesterday. Plus the first hour or 2 I saw no...

May 30, 2011 - Au Natural....

So today I left the coast of Croatia and indeed the coast altogether as i shall not be returning to see the sea. I was a little bit excited, as Plitvice National Park, has been on my radar as a place to visit for a long time now. Unfortunately the bus trip from Split is a good 5 hours (we'd have got there sooner except the bus driver stopped for lunch, 10 kms before the NP entrance). Some crazy people were doing a day trip and returning on a later bus that day. The national park has hotels, and for my 50 euros i'm very happy with the room I...

Jun 13, 2010 - Plitvicer Seen Nationalpark

May 10, 2010 - Plitvice Lakes National Park

The entrance prize was exorbitant, but we were told is was worth it, plus it included all transport (tram and boat) within the park. One only needs to get close to the entrance to see why. Once inside the park, the amazement never stops! If the state of Minnesoto's slogan is 'Land of 10,000 lakes', Plitvice's could be 'Land of 100,000 waterfalls'. And it's not a big park! Two days hiking (and scrambling at several places) throughout the park led us from one stunning view to another. Then when we were done with it all, we cruised on the boat...

May 8, 2010 - Birmingham to Plitivice

Nearby airports were closed due to the ash clouds, but Birmingham was still open and it wasn't until the wheels were off the ground that we were sure we were leaving England! Soon enough, we touched down in Trieste Italy. Well, the airport isn't really anywhere near Trieste, but to be done with airplanes for a while, we really didn't care. Since we will be cycling in Italy later this year, we were eager to pass through as quickly as possible, but we did notice a few things - it's expensive, the food is wonderful and the people, even if...
