Aug 24, 2015 - PLitvice Lakes NP Day 2

Day 2 began with a walk to the entrance early to beat the crowds of bus excursions. After my heavy fall yesterday I was feeling quite ill but given my travel companions passion for National parks and the environment, I persevered. It was very hard to keep my enthusiasm but I remained positive as there were two sections of the falls that we were yet to complete. We started from the very top of the lakes system and walked down the other side of the lakes to experience the different outlook. It was easier that early in the day and the train...

Aug 23, 2015 - Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

We made an early start to the Plitvice Lakes NP as we have read that the crowds can build in the early morning and peak after lunch. I was totally unprepared for the schedule and how to choose from the many trails that can be walked. There are three entrances to the NP and Travel Advisor was full of different recommendations from its contributors. Due to its size and complexity the Park provides a number of pontoons and Buses which are called trains as they are articulated with three cars in each train. At 8:30 am we caught the first boat...

Aug 22, 2015 - Krka NP

Left Zadar late morning and decided to drive the coastal road again and lunch at an obscure town Grab which is halfway to our destination of Krka National Park. On the way we passed some rich agricultural country in the valleys and stopped twice amongst the many fruit stores by the side of the road. Croatia has such beautiful fresh fruit and it is so cheap out of the main tourist areas. We use a lot for our daily smoothies to keep up our energy for this high content itinerary. Driving north east on the western side if the new freeway and...

Oct 14, 2014 - A Day hiking, some good news and some bad

It's hard to believe that we're winding down on the tour with only 3 days left! Still lots to see and do tho. A couple of things from yesterday that I forgot to mention: - we saw our first McDonald's--and apparently Croatia's first McDonald's-- in Split. It was at the big mall right by our hotel. We'd meant to go there (the mall and possibly McD's) after dinner but it closed at 9pm and dinner went until 8:40 so there was no way to make it. - We've been seeing A LOT of bus loads of Asian tourists at each of our stops (actually bus loads of...

Sep 6, 2013 - Plitvice

Friday, September 6 Leisurely morning...slept in until 7:00, ate a light breakfast (due to last nights dinner!) and walked down the cobblestoned road for a 10:00 departure...headed to Opatija...the Croatian Riviera...and then on to our final destination...Plitvice Lakes National Park. You may want to Google it to see what we get to see!! Nudist beaches in Croatia are a long tradition. Many Italian and German tourists come to this area to vacation specifically because of them. This northern part of Istria is scarcely populated...the soil is...

Oct 27, 2012 - 25th October - Plitvice

Hi One and All Thursday 25th and we decided to take a trip to the lake district of Croatia which is called Plitvice. After getting lost on a trip that should have taken 2 or so hours, after 4 hours we finally arrived! For a main tourist attraction, not many Croatians can give accurate directions! But what an amazing place this is! So many lakes, waterfalls, cascading streams! Absolutely incredible! What a great time of year to see it too! Nature in autumn and the different colours of the trees on the mountains and the surrounding lakes is...

Oct 18, 2012 - Plitvice Lakes National Park

Had a lovely buffet breakfast at Hotel Jezero, checked out so we could continue our journey. One of our must sees for Croatia was Plitvice Lakes National Park. We first walked down many steps from the hotel to take a short boat ride to the other side of one of the lakes to hike up and around one of the upper lakes, back to the boat to go across the lake the other way (25 minute ride) to hike one of the trails to see more waterfalls. We were not disappointed, there were many waterfalls, and clear blue green water that you could see the fish...

Oct 17, 2012 - Split to Plitvice National Park

Went back to Diocletian's Palace this morning before heading out for our next hotel at Plitvice National Park. We figured out that we missed the famous statue of John the Baptist and the black sphinx that were at Jupiter's Temple. We found the black sphinx but Jupiter's Temple is closed indefinitely because someone stole the offerings. The guide Judi C asked about the temple asked her if she was from California because he recognized the accent (people from California have an accent??). He also asked her if she knew Hollywood because he...

Sep 27, 2012 - Leaving Slovenia, on to Croatia

I usually don't begin these posts talking about food, but, wow! We just had the best meal on the trip, and one of the best we've ever had. We are in the small Istrian peninsula town of Motovun. This area is famous for its truffles and very good wines. Karen had homemade ravioli with white truffles and I had a steak with black truffles and a sauce from the local red wine grape. The service was great, setting wonderful and, or course, the food was indescribable. Although we did have to pay almost $60 for dinner, dessert, wine, tip, etc! We...

Sep 13, 2012 - Plitvice National Park - water everywhere

Plitvice National Park - water everywhere Woke up to rain showers that continued all day. All day soaker. It was about 43 degrees when we awoke. Not like the Adriatic coast where we used copious amounts of sunblock and light clothing At least our breakfast at the sobe was good to start the day. We went through our clothes and put on our best waterproof gear and headed for the park. We borrowed an umbrella and poncho from the sobe. I bought an umbrella also at the souvenir center at the park entrance. We were determined to try to stay dry...

Sep 12, 2012 - On the road to Plitvice National Park

On the road to Plitvice National Park We biked 5 miles today for a total of 330 miles We ate breakfast at our sobe in Rovinj. We had bought food for breakfast at local bakeries and stores earlier. After packing and biking around a bit in Rovinj we met with a rental car rep and put the finishing touches on our car. It is a Opel Astra wagon. Our bikes fit nicely in the car with their front wheels off. This will be our transportation for the next 3 days. We took the freeway for most of our drive to Plitvice National Park ( NP). Actually it is...

Sep 3, 2012 - Plitvice National Park, Croatia

Monday, September 3 This morning we took taxis to the main bus station and at 8:30 boarded a local bus to take us from Split to Plitvice National Park (4.5 hour journey). It was a very comfortable bus and the scenery was great through lots of countryside and windy roads. We checked into our accommodation in the park and by 2:00 we started our hike. Plitivce National Park was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. The beauty of the National Park lies in its sixteen lakes, inter-connected by a series of waterfalls, and set in deep...
