Oct 28, 2018 - Hill towns in Istria

Istria is a peninsula just south of Trieste in Italy. We visited a "hill town" called Motovun which really did remind us of trips to Tuscany. The claim to fame in the area is also truffles, wildly expensive funghi that the locals use dogs to locate. We did a tasting, and frankly I don't think I will be making fast tracks to the specialty grocery store, but we did have a lunch at an Agrotourism place that made a mean pasta dish with a bit of the stuff. Motovun is also the birthplace of Mario Andretti back in the day (1941) when it was a part...

Oct 27, 2018 - Villages in Croatia; Motovun and Groznjan

Today was another beautiful day, although it's overcast and a storm is coming. We left Trieste in a small van; there's only 5 of us on this pre-trip. (Venice to Malta is the main trip; Rome is the post-trip). If you can see on the map, when we left Trieste, Italy and drove south, we passed over its border into Slovenia; then a few miles later over its border into Croatia. We will visit two small villages and have lunch at a truffle house. This part of Croatia is the peninsula off the northern border of that country called the Istria...

Sep 14, 2012 - Birthday Celebration

Enjoyed a great birthday celebration near the sea. We traveled through the Julian Alps. Our driver was wonderful driving through over 50 hairpin turns. We loved Lake Bled and walked 4 miles around the lake and enjoyed a wonderful lunch. More later. I am having trouble with the computer.

Sep 9, 2012 - Up and down to Motovun

Up and down to Motovun Today we biked 32 miles for a grand total of 279 miles After purchasing baked goods and fruit at a market and consuming them, we were off on another leg of our adventure. Piran will be sorely missed. This beautiful peninsula jutting into the Adriatic sea is truly a gem. We worked our way along the shore trying to stay on track with the ocean to our right. Eventually, we turned inland and went across the border into Croatia. The hill climbing began in ernest. We first biked to and stopped in Buje. The first of 3 hill...

Aug 29, 2008 - Istrian Peninsula, Croatia

We have spent 2 days in Istria, exploring several small towns and tasting lot's of local food and wine. We stayed in Motovun, a town in the center of the peninsula, doing day trips to Rovinj and Pula, and stopping in Opatija as we were leaving. This area is an interesting mix of Italian and Croatian with a large Italian minority and it feels and looks a lot like Tuscany. Our hotel in Motovun, Hotel Kastel, is built inside a medieval castle perched at the top of the town. It was a big hit with everyone, as it has amazing views of the...
