Sep 17, 2012 - We have much o learn from europe

After spending almost 3 weeks in 6 different countries and over A dozen. Cities, I conclude that we can improve so much about our quality of life in North America. Every city we visited is much oder than any Canadian city, most have suffered through multiple wars and bombings ahd all are much more livable. I am in love with the large pedestrian areas, full of cafes, restaurants, parks benches and shops. Most people live in much smaller spaces than we occupy and congregate inpuboicmspaces outdorrs. Any gardens arencultivated for privacy and...

Sep 17, 2012 - Here we are in Hvar, Dubrovnik news to follow

all over the world so people watching is great. Lots of money and many boats and yachts er several days without Internet access, it will take some time to catch up. Dubrovnik news will come later since we arrived on the island of hear yesterday afternoon. Our 8hour ferry journey took us along the coastline of Croatia through the many islands in the Adriatic Sea. Very rocky, Warren mountainous country overall. Our hostel is noisy and busy but we have our own private apartment in an empty house so all the peace and quiet anyone could ask for....

Sep 16, 2012 - Hvar

Hi All, After a long day on Saturday we finally picked up " Bruno". We had difficulties getting out of the marina. We found out that Beneteau's don't turn as well as a Farr does! Combine that with 18 knots of wind and well we had difficulties- bounced off a neighboring boat or two which caused a lot of excitement and we were on our way. It was not until 6:00pm when we set off and motor sailed about 7 miles to a little bay called Necujam on Solta Island. We dropped anchor in the dark and waited to see if the anchor held. Everything was good...

Aug 31, 2012 - Hvar, Croatia

Friday, August 31 Well, I thought we had an early start yesterday. Today I had to get up at 4:30 AM as we had to be at the port for a 6:00 AM departure on a catamaran from Korcula to Hvar. Fortunately, it was only a one and a half-hour ride and we were already in Hvar at 7:30 AM. Hvar is the most luxurious island of Croatia, the sunniest place in the country (2724 sunny hours each year) and, along with Dubrovnik, the most popular tourist destination. Many celebrities come here. As we're all staying in various guesthouses here, it took...

Jun 15, 2012 - Quiet day in Dubrovnik

Friday 15 June Grandma had almost no English and our Croatian is severely lacking so we left her home not knowing whether or not she was expecting us to eat breakfast. We took the car down the hill to check out the beach and found a scarce car park so stayed put, had breakfast overlooking the harbour then went for a swim and relax on the beach for the morning. At around 11 am all hell broke loose as it seems it was the last day of school and large groups of very excited teenagers swarmed onto the beach.  We'd had enough sun by lunch time...

Jun 14, 2012 - Sun shine in Croatia

Wednesday 13 June (Callum's 21st) When the alarm went Fred wanted to roll over but I convinced him we'd not regret being on the early ferry to Hvar, an island 2 hours from Split. It took a few games of ipad scrabble on the boat before he emerged from his Mr Grumpy shell.  We were on the island by 10.30 after a few island passes that had us wondering of we had the Costa Concordia captain at the helm - i.e. very close to land! Who cares because at last the sun is out and the sky looks like it may be blue all day.... Wow wow wow at last...

May 17, 2012 - Weather changes plans

Well here I am still in Hvar which is not the world's worst place to be. It was raining last night and continued so that this morning I was informed the catamaran to Korcula would not be sailing. Second time I've been stung with the weather this week. My options - take a bus to catch a ferry and go back to Split where I would either catch another ferry and return or bus back to Dubrovnik or wait until tomorrow. I decided to wait until tomorrow and see what happens. At least I am staying at a nice place and they gave me the same good price I...

May 16, 2012 - Two Days of Almost Nice Weather

It's now been a couple of nice weather days although yesterday was better. I managed to sit around the pool, which is beautiful, for a few hours before dragging myself away. Then it was time to check out the town, take the pictures, have dinner and return, happy and tired. The town is similiar to the others. A number of old churches, a monastery, a town square, very narrow streets, old stone buildings with red tile roofs and of course lots of stairs. The flowers are beautiful and it is interesting to see the variety of vegation ranging from...

May 14, 2012 - Hvar Bound

Monday AM It seems silly - I can see the island I am going to just south of me but I have to go north back to Split and then come back down again. There was thunder and lightening last night and the storm that has come from the north continues. The wind continues to howl and it is not cool, it is cold. I almost left my warmer things in my back in Dubrovnik, thankfully I didn't as I have all layers on right now. It is suppose to improve tomorrow. My fingers are crossed. I started the morning with a shot of liquer with the fellow who owns the...

Sep 1, 2011 - Hvar

Now our time in Hvar lies very dear to my heart. Why? Because we had the time of out lives and what I love most is that we almost didn't go there. It was  literally "screw it let's just go to Hvar" which we did and it was one of our greatest decisions. We got an 8 hour ferry from Dubrovnik, where I caught up on my very behind journals (what I'm doing right now). From the moment we arrived and we saw our hostel (Lukas Lodge) owner, Luka, there with a sign saying Lukas Lodge and he was yelling "green van! Green van!" in his adorable Croatian...

Jun 13, 2011 - The Island of Vis and Hvar town

We toured around Vis which was extremely interesting. On our walk Heather and I came across an old castle, complete with a defensive wall, moat (now filled in and planted with an orchard) and cannons. The walls were very thick, perhaps three feet, and had slits placed in them for gun or armour use. We crossed the bridge into the entrance into a courtyard that had some artifacts and an area that looks like it is now used for performances. Further on to the centre of the city were many quaint shops, one which had hand-operated music boxes on...

Oct 7, 2010 - Nutters & Nudists

So, time to head to an island again, since that is what Croatia is so famed for. Did you know there are almost 1100 islands along the Croatian coast? We’d read some pretty good stuff about Hvar island, so decided to head down to Drvenik where we could jump on a ferry. Another beautiful drive along the coast in gorgeous sunshine, to the quietest ferry port ever (reminding me of some of the Scottish ferries we had caught months earlier), and a nice quick journey over to the island. We met a nice English couple on the way over, the way we...
