Oct 26, 2019 - The town of Stari Grad on the island of Hvar

John writing This morning our ship left the town of Hvar and sailed around the west end of the island of Hvar on our way to the town of Stari Grad. On the way we stopped in a small bay to let people swim. Although the water temperature is about 75 degrees, the air temperature was only about 65 degrees so I wasn’t tempted to dive in. Lois, however, was the first in, and swam a lap around the boat. While we were still under way, they served lunch which was the usual five course meal. Soon after we tied up to the dock, we met our local guide...

Oct 25, 2019 - On to the Island of Hvar

Lois writing: This morning (Friday Oct. 25) we had two activities, both of which we enjoyed a lot. At 9 AM our guide Juge (pronounced Yoo-Ga) gave us a lecture, with graphics and maps, to explain the history of the former Yugoslavia countries. There was a lot to keep track of, but she made it really understandable. It was especially interesting when she talked about living through the bombing of her hometown of Dubrovnik in the early 1990s, and her worries about whether her son would be home safe from school each afternoon. While this was...

May 20, 2019 - Collecting herbs

Today, a tour of the Island. Our guide stopped in the countryside to explain the herbs we picked growing along the side of the road, and how they can be used as herbal medicines and in cooking. Lavender and Rosemary grow everywhere, and many of the roads are lined with Olive trees. Our room in the Hotel looks out on olive trees in their garden. One of the oldest towns in Europe is StariGrad. It is a UNESCO-Protected World Heritage site. There we visited the 16th Century Castle of the Croatian Renaissance poet and composer, Petar...

May 19, 2019 - Australians are like Canoes

We heard that Australians are like canoes ........ they never tip! This morning awakened by the Church bells peeling for about 5 minutes at 5am. Croatians are predominately Roman Catholic and today there was a confirmation at the Church nearby, and hundreds of people attended dressed in their “Sunday” best, including many men in bow ties. (Bosnians are predominately Muslim’s, and Serbs - Eastern Orthodox.) On daily rotation, we have front seat in the Coach today - a popular position - except, we are only there for the 10 minutes today...

Sep 21, 2018 - Hvar - Day 2

Our second ride on Hvar was also amazing. After a bus ride from Hvar Harbor to Jelsa, we mounted our bikes for a 32 mile ride to Sućuraj. We were told that it would not be as hard as yesterday’s ride. The jury is still out as to whether or not that is true. We had some pretty long uphill grades and, I believe, the downhill was less steep. We had to ride 24 miles before we stopped for lunch. 24 miles! Lunch was at a little roadside konoba and consisted of meats, cheeses, breads, and beverages. The setting was idyllic, the food hit the spot,...

Sep 15, 2018 - More anchorages and historic towns

Friday 7 September Mid morning headed off and anchored in a lovely bay by Vinisce. Saturday 8 September Undertook a short passage to Trogir and anchored near the old town. Went into Trogir which is a very nice medieval town with loads of wonderful architecture – a blend of Baroque, Renaissance and Venetian. In the afternoon we and a whole procession of charter boats left Trogir, with many heading in the same direction as us, towards the Blue Lagoon. By the end of the evening there were 40+ boats in this anchorage. Sunday 9 September After...

May 20, 2017 - More from Hvar

Saturday: The choices for breakfast at Hotel Amfora were outstanding and we ate far more than usual (justifying this by pointing out all the walking we do). So at 10am we met our guide,Jacqueline, in front of the Hotel Palace for a walking tour of Hvar town. Jacqui was a delightful guide, full of knowledge and fun, and we had a lovely couple of hours with her learning all the history and current details of Hvar. The island is classed as one of the most seductive on the Dalmatian coast and the sunniest and greenest (lavender grows all over...

May 19, 2017 - Hvar

Friday: The ferry for Hvar left Split at 4.30pm and because the bus was delayed by traffic we were the last group to board. It was already very full and we had a job to get our luggage in and find a seat. However, one and a bit hours later we landed on Hvar Island at the town of Hvar. An Elite Travel representative met us and transported us to the Hotel Amfora for the next two nights. This was the best hotel we stayed at in Croatia. After a quick refresh we met some of the group for a drink and pizza at the bar overlooking the harbour and...

Thursday, May 18, 2017 Wake up, shower routine, check email outside, and then breakfast at the same patio on the main square. Our group met at 10 am and we walked over to our skipper and guide for the day. We are doing a boat tour today to several Central Dalmatian islands, like Vis. Our boat is a narrow, rigid inflatable speedboat with 2 rows of 5 seats. We sit on seats like saddles, as if we were riding a horse. There a handle bar in front of us. We will cover over 70 km today. We are given some basic instructions and then it is out onto...

May 17, 2017 - Korcula to Hvar

Wednesday, May 17, 2017 We had our alarms set for 4:30 am and after a shower for Brian and packing we were ready to meet the rest of the group outside at 6:40 am. It was already light outside and so quiet - actually quite nice to be outside this early in the morning! We walked down to the dock where the ferry came in and at exactly 7:00 am we left for an hour and a half boat ride to the island Hvar - our next stop. After a pleasant boat ride with a cup of tea for Eke, a cup of coffee and a croissant for Brian, we arrived at Hvar before 9...
