Sep 20, 2018 - Hvar, Day 1

Early start today - bags in the lobby by 7:15, a quick breakfast, and off on another ferry boat. Today, we retraced part of yesterday’s route, sliding past Brać and continuing on to Hvar (the island; more on Hvar the city later.) Today’s crossing was about two hours. After landing, and cooling our jets in a cafe while the bikes were readied, we hit the road about 11:00. Today’s riding route was UP, then DOWN, then lunch, then WAY UP, then WAY DOWN, ending in Hvar Harbor in the quaint old fortress town of Hvar. We had elevation gains (and...

Sep 19, 2018 - Brać

Where to start? Well, I guess breakfast is as good a place as any. We ate at a small place attached to our hotel. It was a nice breakfast buffet. Fruit, tomatoes, eggs, meats, breads, juices, coffee - all the usual stuff. We met the tour guides in the lobby at 8:20 for a 10 minute walk to the ferry. It was another beautiful morning and the ride was just about an hour from Split to Supetar on the island of Brać. We chose our helmets, got our saddles (seats) adjusted, had a snack if desired and headed out for our 25 mile journey around Brać....

Oct 14, 2009 - Split

After a good night's rest we headed off to explore the Dalmatian coast passing through Zadar and on to Split, except for one deviation inland to Knin. This was not one of our best decisions, but another lesson to be remembered...'never rely on tourist brochures'. Oh, well !...it was a nice drive and did give us an opportunity to see some of the horrific destruction from the Balkans War. Abandoned homes and commercial buildings were very noticeable, some because of the 90's conflict and others a consequence of current economics....both very...

Jul 29, 2008 - Korcula

Inhabited since prehistoric times, Korcula is one of the largest island in the Adriatic. We started out at Vela Luka on the western side before a nice downwind sail between Korcula and the mainland to Korcula town. One more beautiful quaint town! We anchored over the back and walked into town. Tony went back to the boat and I spend the day exploring. I was wandering along when I heard my name! It was Phil and Karel off Tehani-li who we were tied up next to in Siracusa when I was on board Jennifer! An Australian couple or rather Phil is...

Jul 17, 2008 - Drvenik, Rozonica etc

Drvenik, Rogoznica and to Trogir After stocking up with groceries we headed out of Split. We have spent a few days sailing between several small, beautiful harbours and towns. Dropping the anchor and taking the dingy into explore. The pictures tell the story. I am now sailing with Tony on Tradewinds, a 35ft Moody. Tony is retired from the British navy and private business and spends a lot of his year sailing on either Tradewinds in the Mediterranean or his other boat in the British Virgin Islands. Not too bad huh? If you want to look at his...

Sep 29, 2007 - Split-Dubrovnik

Alas, it is time to say goodbye to our new friends, with whom we've cycled the islands of Croatia for the past 10 days. 400 miles and 32,000 feet of climbing in our legs, we're definitely strong and fit. Now it's time to switch gears and 'get educated'. We take the ferry to the mainland and say goodbye in Split. A short time to visit the city of Split, where Diocletian built his palace, and then it's on to Dubrovnik, where we'll stay for the remainder of our trip.

Sep 27, 2007 - Hvar Island - 52 miles 5300'

Rain dampens our spirits today, as we ride to Bol, one of the most picturesque villages on the island of Brac. The roads are very slippery, and Bob has a crash. Some bumps and bruises, but he's otherwise OK. He and Christine climb to Vidova Gora, the highest point on the islands, but the view is obscured by clouds. We end the day traveling to Hvar Island on the ferry.

Sep 25, 2007 - Brac Island - 100km 5200'

Today we return to Croatia, and on to Brac Island, one of the larger Dalmatian islands. Cypress trees and pastureland comprise the landscape where goats feed and vineyards produce well-known wines. This is one of the most beautiful rides so far! We climb the ridge to the top, and descend to breathtaking beauty into Postira on the northern side. Again, we're first to arrive and take a well-earned beer recovery!

Sep 21, 2007 - Mljet Island - Korcula Island

No real riding today, we spend our morning visiting St. Mary's island, situated on the Veliko jezero (Big Lake) of Mljet, where monks built their monastery around the 16th century. Then, it's time to board the ferry for our ride to Korcula. Inhabited in the Stone Age, colonized by the Greeks in 6th century BC, and conquered by the Romans in 1st century, Korcula has always been disputed territory. According to legend, Marco Polo was born in the town of Korcula in 1254, in a house near the bell tower. Arriving by ferry, we briefly ride to...

Jul 21, 2007 - So, She Smokes

First day in Split, a pretty harbour town with a very old, very large Roman palace (it belonged to Diocletian)...but of course my eye has been caught by other things... Sitting in an outdoor resto. Devouring a delicious thin crust vegetarian pizza served by a hard-working sturdy woman I would be bedding now if I had any guts at all. Or if she was off her shift. Across from me sit a couple, absurdly blonde, young, eating their pizza as if it's a foreign substance. Both accustomed to being observed, he especially, he glances back at me, wide...

Oct 24, 2006 - Festival Day of Makarska

Today was the festival of Makarska and we arrived in town around 9.30am. There were street stalls operated by the school students and a 3m pot cooking rižot!! The smells were lovely. The town band performed in the St Marko,s Square and the town was full. The schools were closed for the day. We watched the children for the Disabled School perform a play and they were terrific. The singer Coco (Tsotso) performed on the area opposite the sea front and his concert was terrific. I was in a prime position and throughly enjoyed some great...

Oct 23, 2006 - A day on the island of Hvar

Hello from the Dalmatian Coast again. We left home thismorning at 7.30 for the 9am ferry to the island of Hvar where Nikša (NIk,s nieces husband) comes from. While we had our morning cuppa at Drvnik waiting for the ferry, a Scotch Collie came and sat with me. He was just so beautiful and must have known who to sit next to! It was a lovely morning and the 30 min. crossing very smooth and peacefull with the Dalmatian coast slipping away and the tranquil island nearing. We arrived at his parent,s home in Gdinj around 10.15 and were greated by...
