Mar 27, 2010 - On the road to Mal Pais (Bad Lands)

The day before yesterday we all got together for the Wednesday night Luna Llena B.B.Q. This is a bring your own food and beer and its kinda pot luck style. We did roasted vegetables and had a black been dip for chips I brought back from Samara. Lots of other foods to choose from as well. Milli and Chris the owners of the hotel stoked up the B.B.Q. and make some very nice appies. You can buy beer from the community fridge as well if you get low.. Very cool back ground music and Milli & Chris had some friends come by as well so you got to...

Mar 7, 2008 - Back to Mal Pais

This morning as we were traveling back to Mal Pais I almost lost the bike in a river, My bike only had 50% of the tread when we started the trip, so needless to say its down to about 10%. No knobbies and wet river rock don't create much traction. As the bike started to bog down with no more momentum I was able to jump off (up to my thighs in the river) and keep the throtle going to power the bike out of the river. Costa Rican Motorcycle gang- Today 10 miles outside MalPais we joined a Costa Rican Motorcycle gang... 14 guys on twelve...

Mar 3, 2008 - Mal Pais ...The Beach

We ar staying at a place called Surf Camp, may try the waves today, but yesterday somebody saw a tiger shark so we ar watching to see when the locals go back in the water. Well head north tommorrw and should hit some pretty tricky terrain. We mad a couple small water crossings yesterday and we should have some actual rivers to cross as well as timing low tide to take a 6 mile stretch of the beach. later. * if I can find a high speed connection I'll start doing pictures again, right now it takes about 10 minutes per picture and Id rather be...

Jul 6, 2007 - Costa Rica

Hi All, Have been out of civilisation since 1 july. No mobile phone, no internet, no hotel , no back wall to the shower - well back wall of shower is the view of the ocean. I did have a bit of trouble getting here as it is so far from the city and with no mobile, the surf camp moving to new premises and the owner missing a digit on the new number and the old number not being redirected... was exciting though. Anyway, first day I got in the water with the other two guys from camp and tried to get on the surf board and failed miserably. Did...

Jun 1, 2007 - Mal Pais: Surf, surf and more surf :-)

Hi honey I'm home! Yep after about 6 weeks I return to the scene of the crime, the place where it all started, the place where I had one of the best times in my life. I'm back in Playa Carmen near Mal Pais. Really didn't know what to expect as the month I spent here previously was just so awesome mainly due to the people I met, hung out with and surfed with morning, noon and night. At least it was nice to see a handful of familiar faces on my arrival like my roomie Zoë, Tamara who'd come here form Jaco and also be remembered by the locals....

Mar 29, 2007 - Mal Pais: Life's a beach and then you surf

Tranquillo man, Tranquillo... So after a very late or early night depending on what 3am counts on your clock our day consisted of a 6am start, 3 buses, 2 ferries and one more bus equating to 13hours of travel to get there, which had us debating on whether we should have opted for the 4 hour $35 private shuttle bus. Our excuse is that we do have budgets to keep to and besides the shuttle wouldn't have been half as much fun, for example I wouldn't have been treated to Bas dozing off on a packed bus doing the nodding dog impression and nodding...
